how close do you have to be from a beach or reef to classify as a local?

pfft 5km not even. what about here in newy or sydney. there are 3-4 beachs within 5km of each other? each beach has a local crew.

In Ireland, to be a local (non surfing, just community), your grandfather has to be born there.

Your poll doesn't take into account time.
What happens when you leave that break after 20 years spend surfing it, and come back 5 years later - are you still a local?

Coops is right .... I grew up on DY headland but couldn't afford to live there now , this morning at longy I caught my last wave at 6.20 and was in my kitchen at 6.30 so not too bad ....

I see the same guys in the same places all the time but I don't know where they live nor do I care .... they could live 30 minutes away but if they show up everyday I would say that makes them a local at the break, even though they are not local to the area ..... otherwise I could move house and become a North Narra local immediately (obviously I would need to take punching and swareing lessons first) .....

Then what about seasonal surfing .... when I lived on DY headland it was Nth Curly for the summer and DY for the winter ..... now days I surf all over the Nthn Beaches where ever is good .... so that makes me a 'Nthn Beaches local nomad' ......

Look at Butts, he would be at Dee Why more than most on these forums and he lives at Gladesville. Anyone who catches a cab at 5am to get to DY cause his car won't go deserves local statis.

I don't consider myself a "local", but I do know most of the locals.

I think Ringmaster covered what I perceive to be a local

One day I may become a local, but its not up to me to classify myself as one

I've been at Manly now for over 12 years. I probably surf Curly/Longy more than Manly. I really don't consider myself a local at any beach.

I lived near Torquay for 25 years. I probably wouldn't know anyone in the line-up down there anymore.

I reckon it doesn't really matter. It just comes down to respect. Wherever I surf I show respect to those who deserve it whether they be local or otherwise.

Yeah its can be time and distance for sure, sort of residency status.

More than anything it’s an acceptance into the local tribe, and respect is a big part of that as well. Being one of the mob.

^^^^

Can you be a mob of one :?: I don't really want to be accepted by anyone else ..... I just surf and keep to myself (unsociable ol' bugger)
