Re: Surf fitness
Unless you play footy or you're a removalist, packing on a ton of muscle in the gym is 100% useless for real life.

How do you make a girl in a nightclub know you are a surfer? Wear your 'Hayden Rules' T-shirt?

I remember turning up at the Patch one time when I had been living in Surry Hills and the locals had developed this dancing style that involved curling their arm over their head and pretending to shoot the tube. Looked incredibly lame.ctd wrote:How do you make a girl in a nightclub know you are a surfer? Wear your 'Hayden Rules' T-shirt?

If anyone is looking for a 12 foot prone paddle board to train on I may be able to help out. It would be a Jamie Mitchell full carbon 12 foot board for under a grand. About $2500 new. Just PM me. Its on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Its in very good condition. They are hard to come buy esp at that price.
Re: Surf fitness
Would you know of any other 2nd hand models at that length for sale?Natho wrote:If anyone is looking for a 12 foot prone paddle board to train on I may be able to help out. Flexibility: stretching doesn't work how you think it does

So I've been doing it all wrong and probably fcuked my achilles tendon with my stretching. Here's a bit more detail

It was my yoga teacher here in Chiang Mai who took all this stuff as read that alerted me to this latest science on stretching

Re: Surf fitness
I read a book about the spine and the woman who wrote it had the premise of observing a cat's stretching behaviour. Every single time a cat gets up from a prolonged sedentary position it goes through a series of motions
so imagine that sort of simple exercise repeated maybe 50 times a day or more by a cat. Obviously they do it for a reason. Her premise is that we should adopt a similar exercise at least a couple times a day to elongate the spine and ensure every single vertebra has some movement.
so yeah, go cats.

Re: Surf fitness
Really rooted my Achilles tendon area when I started using the pilates machine. Didn't get the foot position right. Walked into the surf for a swim and then collapsed as I dove under a wave.

Re: Surf fitness
Often wondered about the benefits of stretching, found that pretty interesting, and did kind of find myself agreeing with it, based on my experience.Cranked wrote:So I've been doing it all wrong and probably fcuked my achilles tendon with my stretching. Here's a bit more detail

What do you think of massage versus stretching...for some reason I find massage way more beneficial, but is that just in my head, or would science back that up?
Re: Surf fitness
Foam rolling is a big thing in fitness at the moment (and for the past few years) for warm up and cool down, rather than static stretching. Which is much like massage. It seems to have some scientific backing re improving mobility eg http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-reco ... eally-work
The whole static stretch/elongation of muscle is wrong thing has been around for a while - look up Pavel Tsatsouline 'relax into stretch'

Re: Surf fitness
I've been doing a bit of rolling......seems to work. Still can't believe how effective using the stretchy rubber and bending my neck from side to side is. My neck has been bugging me for years and I could hardly turn my head...until I tried doing this stuff.
