Beany, you out with the pros at sub-optimum Cloudbreak. Did it change in any way your perception of top level surfing?

Um.....growing up surfing the Southern Gold Coast regularly kind of set the tone for what to expect when you chuck a pile of world class surfers together in quality waves.
Re: Cloudbreak at that size....The thing initially was it made the waves look a lot easier than they were since from the boat everyone was throwing re entries and whacking cutbacks. The standard was of course high but not much higher than you'd see at Snapper on a good day. First day it was low tide and breaking too hard in shallow water for me. The next day it started out less mean but got harder....and better.
Surf was powerful and fast for the size which was shoulder to head high...sets started to get bigger through the morning. A few bigger ones. I was mainly worried about getting caught inside and writing the rental board off...which ended up happening.
Since I snapped my board after 45 minutes I ended up watching the action for another 2-3 hours. Which was interesting for a while. Pretty cruisy atmosphere all round really since everyone seemed to know everyone else including the boat crew and various odds and sods. Someone would turn up on a JetSki and have a look then either go out or shoot through.

It was funny the first day.....a couple of boats filled with sightseers would turn up with beers and start hooting and hollering....then leave. Really jarred with the general vibe out there.

I've decided supping is a mental disability. Fuck me.

Found a nice left sandbank racing down the line, all to myself near cape Conran. Heaps of fun but inconsistent enough to really only suit a one man crowd.

After an hour who bloody joins me? A couple of suppers right where I am sitting. Retarded.

Yes and no. I guess if you bump into the roadshow in another environment you have the variables of the audience and navigating the local traffic, etc. so you have less insulation from how everyone interacts with each other and their minders.

Having said that......you've just got a bunch of hot surfers who know each other very well practising in good quality reef surf. Hanging on the boat you got to hear and see who was acting like a dickhead and who was having a good time.

I got a bit bored watching after a couple of hours and was hoping we could go over to Namotu for another surf.

It did get me thinking about the age old conundrum of what people do to catch waves and make a buck out of surfing.
So, in conclusion, Steve.....Id say it gave me a much more up to date perception of top level surfing. I also had a 19 year old goofy foot with me who thought he'd died and gone to heaven getting two surfs at Cloudbreak with the pros.

namotu is a terribly frustrating wave after you've been surfing Cloudbreak.

I would've thought most waves would be like that after surfing Cloudbreak.

There were a few comments about a well known South American. He was cursing and yelling on every wave.
Re: Nomatu....I like it and the last surf I'd had there was not crowded at all. I'd actually got someone from the wedding to come out. He was older and had a brand new rental mal. He had come in before me. He can surf okay but he wasn't expecting to be out there. Jockeying with the pros isn't that easy when you're 60 and older. The reefs softer at Nomatu as well. Fair few people had cuts at Cloudbreak including John John.

Beautiful afternoon conditions with some good size waves. Great day to be in the water.
