Scanned computer cuts

Post by SURFFOILS » Tue Apr 14, 2015 10:24 pm

Hi guys,I think at last count there were 6 computer shaping companies on Sydney's Northern
Beaches, but are there any companies in Australia that can actually 3-D SCAN a 3-D shape and get it right the first time ??

His the only one with that tech in south east asia

At my last count one had gone under on the gold coast.

Why pay for a computer shape when u can get a decent made indo board with fins ready too ride for under $309 ?
Because you could shape your own board, and if it turns out magic, scan it and reproduce it, or tweak it.

I don't think it will be long before a smartphone app can produce a 3d scan of good quality, by simply overlaying and averaging frames from video taken from various angles around the board.

I seached for 3d scanning apps a while ago and found nothing, but things change quickly;

Have a look at this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... atch&hl=en

And here a link to the much more powerful (and less user friendly?) version in open source software: http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/
The 3D-COFORM consortium has one over-riding aim: to establish 3D documentation as an affordable, practical and effective mechanism for long term documentation of tangible cultural heritage.
http://www.3d-coform.eu/

And by "tangible cultural heritage' they mean......Surfboards, what else? :-)(

....the only dead accurate scanner is on the KKL Byron Bay....although pre-shapes take a bit more time to finish off than the AKU pre-shapes.

Thanks Kayu, you always know the right people in Australia.

I've heard of the KKL business but it's a matter of checking if they actually know their stuff.

I've been through 3 companies here in Sydney who said they knew....
But they didn't.

Said they could....
But they couldn't.

Said it would be fine , perfect, no wuckers mate...
But they wucked it.

I'm sure in 5 years we will all have scanners and 3-D printers in our own homes but until then....
