Jack Roberton: Big Wave Surfer
I enjoyed this short piece about Jack Roberton.
It's fun to read about his early adventures with his travelling mate, Steve Shearer.

that was a good start...i could happily read another 10,000 words or so.

Interesting but not unique. You would be surprised how many young Aussies have done pretty similar stuff over the decades and probably still are doing it. Taking nothing away from Jack and Steve. Obviously very committed surfers in their day and with the skills and sense to not end up drowned. I'm certain they would agree they probably met others on a similar path to prove themselves in challenging waves. Of interest, I think it was around that time ( early 1990's) did you happen to bump into two young big wave nuts Corey and Boogs brothers from cronulla point and shark is local fame? they lived on a 20 kilo sack of rice in the bush to exist.

You read about Steve Shearer in an amazing adventure like this and it breaks your heart how his life turned out.

i can't wait for aaarating's review of Proust."...interesting but not unique. you would be surprised how many other young Frenchies have done pretty similar stuff over the decades and eaten a dainty baked good with their cup of tea only to then remember they forgot to buy loo paper while down the shop yesterday."

I can't wait to get around to reading the story you've linked foamy.
But as is often the case with links elsewhere on soc med, one tends to go for the comments first. Churlish I know.
Ended up wif a loving wife and two beautiful children in an idyllic part of the world.

Loofy measures shearers success against his own. There's more to life than patrolling the Eastern beaches of sydney in your Land Rover stocked up full of thousand dollar surfboards and monkey pumping about in closeout mush.
Re: Jack Roberton: Big Wave Surfer
Hows that?? The guy has said how driving that bus depresses the shit out of him. I feel bad that he is stuck in that thing day in day out like a caged animal when he is a pretty free spirit.

" ..... we were going out in Hawaii in surf as big as it gets......when you have the right equipment it's easy".
Maybe for him. It's a totally different mindset to that possessed by mere mortals like me who shit themselves when the waves get bigger than 6 feet.
