But in the context of the scores they'd already given out Slater deserved to get the score on his last wave.

John John did too.
No he didn't. Gabs waves were far better than slaters. Compare Gabs first wave to slaters last. IMO gabs was better. His surfing in the final was next level.
Slater was genuinely rattled during that heat.

am I alone in thinking jjf's body of work in his heat with slater, was greater than kelly's..?

I mean the opening exchange seemed like two 9.9's each, but the second scoring waves, jj's was a flat out better surfed wave than Kelly's?

i wish to christ they'd score the best 3 waves per heat so the judges cannot repeatedly and repetitively paint themselves into a corner with their scale.

remove the elimination rounds, every heat is sudden death 35-40 minutes and best 3 waves count. how fcuking hard is it for the asp to turn a great spectacle into an excellent one?

Only 'cause it's a two wave format. If it was a three wave format, they'd struggle to get three.

Once it was four waves, a format perfectly suited to shithouse Australian beach breaks, man! that was all time. Ever try to get four good waves at Sunset Beach in 20 minutes

take away the non-elimination rounds, extend the heats to 45 mins if you need to.

BOOM!

I would get rid of non-elimination heats, have 3 surfers in the water, and have best single wave score. The clock ticking down, anybody can win, fortune favours the bold. The first 2 can advance.

Quarters, semis and final can revert to 2 man, 2 wave format.

Do any if you junkies think there is anyone outside of the wct top echelon could have surfed those waves better? I think not. Postponing the wct at cloudbreak last year was worth it to witness what big wave specialists could do in those conditions but what went down this week was the best display of commited, ballsy and skillful surfing I've ever seen.

ah Shane Dorian would have fit right in to that situation and maybe Manoa Drollet if he was fully healthy.

That'd be about it though. Oh maybe fongss if he wasn't off charging S... oh gosh I better not say

Really, only 2? Jeff Rowley, Marty P and a whole host of other nuts? Surely at least some of them crew are on a par in that sort of stuff?

there'd be plenty who would charge it, marti, alex grey etc ... but no humans could do what john john, kelly and gabs were doing today. they were next level.

andy obviously would have.

Rowley?? No chance IMO. Maybe a few pipe specialists like Healy or JOB, Ricardo. Rowley loves the big stuff, prepares for it, but the intricacies of what went down today is pretty specialised.

Gotta say medina surprised the hell outta me today. He charged. He gets lots offside (that whole inside position thing in his QF was ordinary) but his performance in the final was the best heat of the event IMO.
