Re: Where did you surf today ?
I was out in a springsuit yesterday. The water was warm but the off shore was freezing so I went out in the steamer this morning. Didn't get any waves and I completely butchered the one wave I took off on. My mate reckons I almost got decapitated by my own board when I fell off. Saw 3 broken boards out there this morning.Karlos wrote:Yep we christened the Iggy sled the 'greedy board'. It was picking off some nice set waves. Oh yeah, he'll do alright down at Phillip Island as he was the only one out in boardies (not even a rashy) & even though the water was nice, that offshore at 6.30-7.00am this morning was pretty bloody bracing to say the least.
As for me, one runner, three shutdowns.
Went to the southern end of my local later this arvo. Small and closing out. The offshore seemed to have turned up a notch or two compared to this morning.

Airport Reef. Docs finally said I can fly, and surf. But was warned no shallow reef as medication means bleed like a stuck pig even if I do something as soft as bump a shin on a coffee table. So Airport Reef it was.
Was head high and super fun, especially when I was with a much respected local who's a close friend of someone I'm close to and who also loves fishing as well. As is the way there after introductions and smiles the other local guys out called me into some set waves. Didn't over-exploit this godsend so just picked off a few. And was no bullying of few other tourists out if they were on the inside. That was rare though. Loved watching the fluid style of the Balinese. Made me feel even more like a stiff backed old gumby though!
Learned futureflex boards suck Balinese street dogs' balls in slightly choppy faces. This to me makes BS of claims this particular model is a brilliant all round one board travel board.
Also remembered surfing in 30.1C water at 1pm under sunny skies is truly unpleasant.
And witnessing Spanish macs spear vertically two metres out of glassy seas is always a buzz.
(Corrected post as dumbo here said kuta reef before. Knack erred after six hours in outrigger boat fishing plus the surf)

pumping here too.
With that long period pure S swell and straight offshores it felt and surfed like a reallly, really good day at Bells Beach.

north nsw back beach with not another soul out, 4 foot freight train sets, could get into the barrel but not out haha, needed a bigger board for paddling. looked even bigger round the corner before the northerlies hacked into it.

maybe. checked a spot further south and it was 6 foot on the sets. two blokes out and when they made it down the face they just got swallowed up.saltman wrote:I get the feeling up on the north coast the swell picked up quickly from sunrise and then has peaked mid morning ?
a lot fewer rogue peaks
way too fast without a serious piece of equipment. wind knocked it around before noon.
i only had two 5'9s in the car and could have used something bigger to paddle with, and it was only one and half overhead where I was. just a fast and meaty groundswell.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
the big sets were BIG -- 8', very clean with plenty of time between to paddle out. not crowded.
i spent an hour waiting for the tide to come up and psyching myself into going out. felt a little undergunned on a 5'9".

well frankly I think the next swell (Weds/Thurs) will be a fair bit heavier and thicker.

i should have the car for those days, so i can go somewhere a little more protected...and just watch. i really need to repair my other board.Nick Carroll wrote:well frankly I think the next swell (Weds/Thurs) will be a fair bit heavier and thicker.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
I was surprised to how chubby some of the waves were yesterday, even on the lower tide. I think that wind was so strong it was holding up the lips a bit too much.

Coastalwatch Today: In a word its pumping.
Stars?
One.
Very true however as most of the Eastern Suburbs wouldn't handle the swell at the moment.
Seems to have dropped off this arvo from the cams anyway.
