I bought a Subie forester GT (wrx engine) brand new in 2001 and i've still got it, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this car, you can fit a 9'6" noserider in it diagonally and anything else, reasonable economy, absolutely loves dirt roads and goes like stink ... in fact she's yours for $18,000, it's time for a new one!

Subi all the way! I had a 97 Liberty Wagon for 4 years and recently upgraded to a 2004 Outback (bog standard, no leather 2.5 litre model.)

The boxer engines in Subi's are awesome and will take whatever you throw at them. I never had any problems with my Liberty.

Subi's keep their value because they are so bl00dy good! The only down side is - if you have really long legs they have less leg room in the front then a modern mini! - Fact...

My bit,

Have a VW country buggy (highly modded) as Iggy and Sean have seen. (it floats too). This is for the real bushbash stuff as with the locker diff it can climb a 50 degree slope.

Anyway the family hack is a 95 Liberty wagon $8K in 2007 with 170K klicks up. Did Bourke to Randwick incl PM peak hour traffic in 8hrs 20 mins at 11km per litre. Topped out at 185 on the way up. Previous hack was a 89 Subie sportswagon. Did Arnhem Land in 03 (way in too), Sydney to Darwin in 4 1/2 days, eventually died of a dud gearbox at 400K. Subies are the duck's guts!

I'd never buy a grey or black car.Apart from me not liking the colours grey also blends in far too much with the road and can be easy to miss.

I also contemplated a '96 Cherokee...and bought it too. Though mine was green. Not the best car for the 'hardcore' cred (got told to 'f*ck off back to Mosman' by a bunch of North Coast fisho's once) but great value for money. Cherokee's don't hold their value so you can pick one up for cheap and drive it into the ground.

I chose to drive mine into a telegraph pole instead.

Never did believe Dr Karl about microsleeps before that happened...

don't you mean ... easy to hit ....

my wife had to have a charcol grey car ..... it's a bugger to keep it clean ... but the way she drives you'd have trouble catching her to run into her anyway ....

I always go with light colours 'cause of the dirt / appearence factor ...

someone mentioned to me the other day they have just recalled a heap of jeeps because they were catching on fire!

best course of action when a jeep catches on fire - add more petrol

If you live outside the city or do lots of country miles then there is only one word.

Landcruiser.

Nailed (unfortunately) my first wallaby the other day (I nearly cried!) without time to even take my foot off the accelerator at 100km/h +. Didn't bother the
vehicle one bit. Deisel, easy to get parts all over OZ and does 13l per 100km, which for a 2.4t car is not bad.

I'd go a Mitsubishi L300 van for the city, you can't kill em. Also keep in mind that because of the current price of gas it is no longer economically viable as a cheaper fuel option.

Their great vehicles but not for everyone, the 4.2 diesels in the 80
s and 100's last forever but they aren't too nice to drive..4.5 petrol is good but does about 20L per 100L.troopys are tough as hell but lack a lot of features for the money..can't believe what they charge for the new ones...

He he he

Think Jeep's may have a few defect issues. I hit a telegraph pole head on at about 80km's an hour. The pole ended up smashing through the engine block and stopped just before the windscreen. Neither airbag went off.

Looking back now I guess I was sort of dazzled by the name and the price tag. And the heated leather seats may have influenced my decision too.

Still, I had that thing bouncing down dirt tracks all over the country. Took it to the SA desert twice and did some great exploring.

Aston Martin DB9.

As I've mentioned before it's a bit of a hassle putting the passenger front seat down.

G'day Dino!!
