Anyone watch some good films lately?

I just saw Pan's Labyrinth. Excellent Spanish movie by Guillermo del Toro. Its a tale of a young girl and her mother during the Spanish civil war in 1944. The mother marries a Fascist Captain and moves to a hide out and takes her daughter Ofelia. There, Ofelia meets a magical Faun who leads her into a world of fantasy. The movie is split between the struggle of the "Reds" versus the oppression of the Fascists and Ofelias dark fantasy world.

I am still pumped up from this film, i absolutley loved it and is brilliantly acted by everyone. I wont spoil it for you guys but its one for plenty of discussion.

In short, its a fairytale for adults. In Oz it has a MA15+ rating. Should make the burliest of men cry.

4.5 Stars. (Yes i am using the Metric system)

Blood Diamond is also very good. Magnificent acting and it makes you more socially and economically conscience. Powerful movie

4 stars.

Apocolypto is a great movie and i enjoyed it very much. If you dont think of Mel Gibson making it, its quite a good watch. Its the tale of a young man in central america during the Inca times who still lives the tribal life with his family. His world suddenly flips as he is exposed to the Incan way of life. The movie has great movement and its quite an epic story full of violence and action. A real edge of your seat kinda stuff.

If you forget the historical inaccuracies id suggest you give it a go.

4 stars.

New Will Ferrell movie is good. What's its goddam name. That's not a good sign is it. But a most amusing film, great efforts from Emma Thompson as the nervous, tired genius author and Dustin Hoffman as the eccentric English lit professor, and clever writing.

Hate to admit it but i agree with coops on Blood Diamond and Apocalypto so i think i may give pan's labyrinth a whirl this weekend and see how spot on your rating system is.As long is it is not a horror movie.I don't watch that crap.

I saw Dejavu and didn't rate it highly - 3 stars

Happy Feet i would give 4 stars- i know its a kids movie, but a good one.

And slightly off topic here but SBS have been running some damn good foreign films lately. There was a French one called something like "Goodbye" with Gerard Depardieu.

Earlier that week there was another good movie about a prostitute who worships god and has a little shrine in her room and the Soldier who is smitten with her, even though he thinks all prostitutes are dirty and every night goes into the brothel and starts fights.Sorry, the details are a bit fuzzy but yeah..SBS should not be overlooked.

next to see apart from pan's labyrinth: "Perfume" i've heard good reviews about it; the next eddie murphy comedy when it comes out "Norbit"

oh and bra boys movie gets released at randwick ritz on march 15th

Got to agree, that review of pans labrinth is quite enticing, just need to find some time. and money. Got to love being a lowely hsc student

Also heard good stuf about perfume, but man that'd have to be a weird movie. I read the book when i was craving english in germany and it completely freaked me out - cant imagine how they'd make it into a movie though...

liking your reviews coops. I'd rate both blood diamond and apocalypto. Haven't seen pan's labrynth, but heard nothing but good things about it.

I'm a shocker with films. I see so many of them from the video store that they all tend to blur. I couldn't name a single director and his films, and struggle with any actors names other than a-list hollywood.

Been watching sh!tloads of mexican cinema recently heading into exchange, so been watching alot of Gael Garcia Bernal. He's excellent in almost anything I watch him in. Dot the I (*****), Y tu mama tambien (*****), Amores Perros (****), and most recently The Crime of Father Amaro (****1/2).

Oh, finally got around to watching eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. That was excellent. Way better than I was expecting.

And I've been into a theme of disturbed school kid movies recently... Aussie film 2:37 is great, then Speak, then Elephant. There's shitloads of parrallel's and similarities between them (particularly 2:37 and elephant) but how deep can you take a single day of school? All pretty intense too.

Donnie's old though, but still a cult classic.

For a newer but similar one try Brick. Sorta like a serious revenge of the nerds... Like super intelligent school kid takes on super big time muder drug dealer school kid... :?

It's good. hey, trust me. I work in a video store.
