when to repair cracked fins

Post by betty boop » Thu Jun 30, 2005 3:38 pm

My new board has a small 2-3 cm crack behind one of the fins, although the fin is very stable

Should I get it fixed now or can it wait. Is there a way of telling when it has gone all the way through the fibreglass and needs fixing?

Thanks.

Thank you, it was that beautiful green 6'4" Mccoy nugget

They were pleased to sell it to me after calling them every week for the last 4 months

Thanks funboarder.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I suspect there will be a few very kooky sessions coming up.

How's the Miller Waterskate vs nugget decision going?

Second hand waterskates are much more common and cheaper than nuggets. Wicks at Collaroy often have some

It's important to stop water seeping through cracks and getting into the foam.I use 5 minute araldite [8ml pack 2 4ml tubes that you mix 50/50].
Repair process, put 2 strips of tape 5 milimetres either side of crack & 2strips 5mm past ends of cack to form a rectangle.Sand this area with a bit of medium sandpaper so araldite sticks better.Sqeeze out a small blob of glue into mixing chamber on packet, then add same amount from other tube &mix.Cover whole rectangle with glue overlapping onto tape, then remove tape one strip at atime, this leaves a nice neat rectangle that will be dry in 5 mins.

Thanks Phil.

How thick do you put the araldite on?

i suppose arildite would work too, but i just use the Solarez stuff you get in a surfshop. 5 bucks for a tube. Its a resin that dries in the sun after 5 mintues, so no mixing required.

Hi Betty
macca202 is onto it. the sun cure stuff from the surf shops does the jub for small cracks. as for the decision - not sure but have9'2" to sell first. might wait for your report on the 6'4" nugget's performance! give me your vrdict after you've given it a go; i think you are somewhere about the same level as me. interested to see what you say re stability, turning, and duck diving. cheers :D
