get a mini mal. surf 2-3 hour sessions. slop junk doesnt' matter, just catch waves bruss, and lots ov em. it's WBWD.

or i could invoke all my inner creativity and flow and continue riding my log, while also priming my shortboard skills for when swells do arrive.


i'm not suggesting for one second we have a gay-arse surf off at avalon. but i'm pretty convinced i can surf my log faster, tighter in the pocket and more gracefully than you can on your mini-mal. and of course i get style points for no legrope.

And anyone with a reasonable level of competency is going to look more graceful on a trad-log than some rockered up thruster mini mal (that's essentially just a longer version of shortboard, covering more ground). That's a given.

I had a lovely day on the log today. Little spring zippers, a few little barrels even.
Is 8'10 single a log, or a minimal by your guys standards?
I would call it upper middy myself, but as it's so flat rocketed it surfs anything.

Middies are typically between classes as being between 7-8 foot I believe.
A trad log would be the tits! Not so great however in crowded sectiony beach breaks.

? I've got eight boards. One of them is a mini mal. I go through phases of riding it, then not. I can foresee it'll be getting a dust off some time pretty soon as spring windswells kick in. They cover ground, and turn slop into fun. Plus can be great on bigger walled up days with flatter faces, drawing your carves out.

And like I've said before, I'd love to own a trad-log. A proper 9 footer and get right into "actual" longboarding, nose riding and cross stepping etc. But it's just not a practical choice for me. Crowded sectiony beachbreaks you risk moving over people. And I don't have the space to store one, nor wish to grapple with it up and down a winding staircase.

I think they made one with a hinge in the middle that you could break in two for travel.

Would that be something you are interested in?

Does it come with frangipani decals?

Yep, I have a minimal and a log among others. The log needs a certain type of wave. Minimal has a much broader scope. Would prefer to surf the log more often but as you say shifty sectiony quick dumpy beachies not really fun.

I haven't surfed a minimal in a long time but got one for Mrs. Beerfan and eldest beerfan spawn as my wife was struggling with my poly 7'er, just too heavy for her ( she's 50kg ) and my daughters cheap soft board is floppy junk. I'm yet to try it out but no doubt I will soon enough.

I'll steal the kids body boards sometimes so image isn't an issue for me:)

Got some nice little peeling log waves at pk the other morning. Fun as hell. I suck at the finer points but it's awesome fun

i was in log heaven this morning. 2-3 ft and morbidly obese peelers for 100m or so. i was gassed after each paddle back outside.

still ... what i would give for a decent shortboard session and a few proper turns.

what a depressing state of affairs ... spring is just an all round shit time, huh?

I heard this bloke on the radio the other day; specialist in mental health and he was talking about some reasons for depression being seasonal and related to disrupted circadian rhythms amongst other things.

Immediately the penny dropped. Soon as spring starts I feel this almost insane restlessness and general sense of ill-being. That gets super-charged as soon as Grand Final weekend passes and daylight savings starts and the spring/summer world of endless hot windy afternoons descends.

Luckily today I caught a jew, a tailor and a flathead: a spring trifecta.

Otherwise, I'd head to the Himalayas for 6 months from daylight savings.

I should try to catch a fish on Saturday then. Winter hasn't been the best this year - hanging around my neck like a sodden heavy woolen blanket. And now spring is nigh. At least there's the sun. I'm in need of it, but fcuk off daylight saving and the relentless devil winds
