Do you ever read a guidebook or check TripAdvisor before you travel? Why are waves any different?
Localism just means that because you have been granted a privileged position, with the time, finances and ability to learn about a wave, no one else should have that opportunity or even be informed about the prospect. Transfer that to any other part of life or society and see how the principle holds up. I understand the feeling, everyone is selfish. Heck, entire political parties are built on upholding and defending privilege. But not ones I support. We are trying to go beyond a society of secret handshakes and whispers between the 'right' kind of people.

Localisms good for surfing mate, you just have to learn to work with it, or around it depending on the circumstances. Different breaks have different brands of localism going on, depends on the culture.

The Aussie big wave surfer, Camel, who comments on Swellnet says he keeps his mouth shut but when he sees his relatively obscure SA & WA desert spots get media exposure he fearfully awaits the crowds. Doesn't happen. Just the same old crews turn up. He reckons it is a bit of a false fear.
People mostly already know. The close and easily accessible spots are already crowded. The far away spots are still too far away for most.
Accurate wave forecasting is probably a bigger factor. People know when to turn up.
As a separate point, if a spot has tourism facilities then it is not a secret.

Yeah Foamy, dunno about camel these days, a while ago he was found at one of those quiet spots with his own film crew, and his reasoning was when asked wtf are you doing? Well I gotto make a living some how. These particular places it is not so much the amount of waves it is the crap and the erosion from more people camping.
Accurate wave forecasts only really help if you know the spot really well.
I know a few places with tourist facilities with great waves that the average punter would not pick.

Camel, a west australian, now made to feel less than welcome in some spots in SA, shame.
What happened to just going surfing ffs.
Same for those other guys behaving like a bull in a china shop, Bonython and Schmucker.
They try to rationalise what they do but the people whose lifestyles are affected know how short sighted and exploitive some "surf journalism" is.

You do realize that most people on the internet and probably a higher percentage on surfing forums are dickheads, so it is not just me your insulting.

I'm a bit disappointed though , when swellnuts had pm's smucker used to message me often to call me a c@ckhead, I find personal abuse so intimate.
