Russian hookers and yachting it in Greece would fix just about anything.

Seasons

In Australia, the seasons are defined by grouping the calendar months in the following way:

Spring - the three transition months September, October and November.
Summer - the three hottest months December, January and February.
Autumn - the transition months March, April and May.
Winter - the three coldest months June, July and August.

These definitions reflect the lag in heating and cooling as the sun appears to move southward and northward across the equator. They are also useful for compiling and presenting climate-based statistics on time scales such as months and seasons.
the four seasons is a northern hemisphere idea, it doesn't translate well to Australia at all. The fact that the southern hemi is massively more oceanic than the north is a huge difference which affects seasonal shifts very differently than do the large land masses of the nth hemi. plus there are big differences in latitude and ocean exposures here in Oz which throw it all out again. Aboriginal people around here (the Sydney basin) had six seasons figured out, in some cases eight. That sorta feels like it makes more sense here.

the four seasons translates to tasmania. the only place I've ever lived where there's 4 distinct seasonal shifts. All them glorious.

Yes indeed they are down there Braithy. I def remember how distinct the shifts were. The light, the smell, the flora....ah.

There was a bloke on the radio yesterday arvo discussing this exact issue.
Especially in relation to sydney. Suggesting sprinter and sautum be inserted.

You should send that to BOM. I'd vote for it.

I reckon almost anywhere inland that isnt in the tropics has distinct seasons and usually about 4. Just cos you get to live on the coast and its always warm and pleasant doesnt mean the other 90% of the country doesnt exist...

Ok, Steve, I accept that's your Spring, but although we have flowers in bloom (bearded heath, coastal wattle and coastal ti-tree for eg.), that doesn't mark Spring for me down here. Despite the flowering and some recent warm weather, it's not consistent enough. Will be in a few weeks

Trev, apologies for mis-reading your post re higher latitudes. Laziness on my part

Skip, Sprinter and Sautumn makes sense here. Think the local indig recognised 7 seasons

And, Steve, sorry to keep challenging, but

It doesn't snow in Spring, but often does in Sept

snowfall is rare in sep and spring Vic, but does happen.

I think we've progressed far enough in the debate here to acknowledge different parts of the country have different seasonal ranges and timings.

But only unobservant dullards follow the traditional northern hemispheric thinking that you need high lats or cold weather to have four seasons or more.
