Mackeral sky is alto-cumulus or cirro-cumulus.

Mares tails is classic cirrus mostly. Usually occurring in pre-frontal NW to W winds.

Both pretty good surf indicator clouds.

How can watching and being aware them help predict local weather :?:
The ants in central Qld were the worst I've ever seen them, all carrying larvae to higher ground.

You should have got a fistful and shoved them your pants.

There's your festive season.

Shit's getting real.

Just checked up on cloud types and you are 100 percent right Steve.
I always thought stratus were high level but they are in fact those drifting low level clouds. A bit like smoke drifting.

I was up in Cairns a while after one of the cyclones and they said that a week before the cyclone all these sea birds flew in and roosted under eaves and in trees around town.

pre-frontal cirrus swooping in from the W, cumulus towers seaward. Classic May sky.
