Re: autumn
This last swell cycle delivered nicely around here as that low stalled near the South Island, looks like the next system will do the same with a bonus SE/NW retrograde back into the Tasman........that angle, SSE/SE, makes long-lined music around here.
That's the pattern....of more interest is the progged low pressure formation in the Vanautu/North Island corridor and it's potential directional movement from NE to SW. That broadscale pattern is the favoured one for big clean E swells as late season tropical heat in the SPCZ rebalances via extra-tropical low pressure formation.
July 2001 was the model.
May 2011 delivered bigtime too.
watch this space.

Re: autumn
I really love the fact that some random but sometimes predictable weather patterns can alter my mood in such a major way. Bummer when you miss it though.

No so predictable this week, the weekend forecast has changed dramatically over the last 2 days.Beanpole wrote:I really love the fact that some random but sometimes predictable weather patterns can alter my mood in such a major way. Bummer when you miss it though.
On the plus side, I was worried about tactics to use to get out for a surf on mothers day.

Re: autumn
Steve, I go away this time every year to pretty much the same location (in NSW) and I have to say that this year, the water was incredibly warm compared to all of the previous times we have been.
What's your thoughts on this and what sign do you think this is for the late Autumn/upcoming Winter swell seasons?

Re: autumn
Well I'll be out of the water until late June, so I predict it will absolutely crank

Re: autumn
Took the lures out today for the first time Boo.
Got five tailor.
ten fillets, weighing in somewhere between 1200-1300grams. $20-25 bucks worth of fish.
Those things are worth their weight in gold.

Re: autumn
you've got some really good tailor spots near you.
5 bucks from BigW. Have to be this colour.
Shallow divers work too.
Metals work as well but I mostly fish the tides and not the time of day now, hence you need to work the deeper parts of the water column.
I use poppers at dawn in the washes. Should be A grade popper conditions tomorrow.

Really?steve shearer wrote:I mostly fish the tides and not the time of day now
Conventional wisdom where I learnt to fish was that anything after 730am was a waste of time for apex pelagics off the rocks. What time of day/tide did you get that longtail?

Re: autumn
I got that longtail at 11.15am.
Fishing the tides.
I'm not going to say what tides because I don't want these spots suddenly infested with beer drinking rednecks from Casino.
It was SE 15-20knots. One of those crappy days with heavy rain squalls.
I've caught more tailor at midday than dawn in the last twelve months.
Double figures on jewfish on lures (in the last 12 months) since I started fishing the tides properly.

Re: autumn
I mainly meant casting metals and poppers for mackerel off the rocks.
I haven't done much serious casting of hard bodies, tbh.
Might have to reassess my approach.
I fish the tides off the beach and in the creeks.

Re: autumn
I caught the tuna on a 65g Raider.
Got another tuna (mack tuna) about 6kg couple weeks ago at 1pm on a metal.
It's all a learning curve.

And the spoils for those who adapt and target are getting more concentrated.
Used to be, any dickhead could catch a feed of fish.
Same thing in surfing.

Steve, excuse this interruption on the fishing thread, but I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts on this one please?Donweather wrote:Steve, I go away this time every year to pretty much the same location (in NSW) and I have to say that this year, the water was incredibly warm compared to all of the previous times we have been.

You haven't thought this through shearer
... the beer drinking rednecks from casino might bring beefweek queens with them.
Notice the use of plurals.

Re: autumn
As we approach the predictability barrier for the ENSO state we are faced with a fascinating state. A sort of quasi Nina, with high chances for a negative IOD.
Wet winter?
ECL filled winter ala 2007?
