Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
some crazy stuff going on up there.
Flash floods in Toowoomba, 8 dead, 72 missing.
Workers in Brisbane CBD being told to go home, West End being evacuated. New Farm flooding.
Wivenhoe is approaching 200%, and the point at which flood storage is full and the dam could overflow, or the fuse plug could give way.
BOM is suggesting that it could be bigger than '74.
Stay safe, people.

Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
Granted the devastation in Toowoomba and surroduning areas yesterday is catastrophic as well as the floods up in Central and Western Qld, however today's frenzy in Brisbane is just inducing pandemonium and paranoia. Check out the footage of the SE Freeway at lunchtime today after the city and south brisbane offices were told to shut down. Ridiculous and just scare mongering, particularly considering the peak of this event isn't expected until Wednesday or even now Thursday they're saying.
Even people in higher locations are being told to prepare for the worst and daycares etc are closing this afternoon and remaining closed tomorrow. This is just ludicrous in high locations away from low lying flood areas and just making people think the world is going to end.
We had some stupid mole come racing into the office just before lunch screaming and shouting everyone get out now, they've just released water out of wivenhoe dam. Most people packed up their belongings and bolted out the door. Our office is on George St, just near the Casino....one of the highest locations in the CBD and secondly, if they've just released water out of wivenhoe then it aint gonna get here today. Scare mongering at it's best. There's presently 3 people left in the office including me.
Media are having a field day frenzy with it also. And it's still got an amazingly long way to go to get anywhere near 1974 (in Brisbane CBD). Port Office gauge peaked at 6.6m in 1974. They were forecasting a peak of 3m tomorrow. Have now upped that to 4.2m peak on Thursday. Let's see what it gets too, but it's a mile away from 1974!!!!

Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
but Don, they're tying up the crocs at Australia Zoo in case they swim away!
Surely that's one of the signs of the apocalypse?!
The topic was meant partly tongue-in-cheek, without wanting to diminish anything that's happened on the Downs. Or is yet to happen.
Last I heard from Bligh (secondhand) was that they were expecting 6m on Thursday. Not quite 74 levels, but pretty wet.
74 is before my time, but from what I've read and seen (e.g. flood height markers around town), it won't be catastrophic.
If the dam wasn't there...
Granted, they've lost it a bit, but I think most of the actions are based around road closures and people being cut off rather than damage to property.
Trying to avoid a Theodore/Rockhampton problem.
Sound like you're going to have a day off tomorrow. Pity many roads out of town are cut, except to the Goldy maybe, and that's probably not where I'd be headed at the moment.

While I was typing:
http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20805.html
"At the Brisbane City Gauge (lower end of Edward Street and at Thornton Street),
moderate flood levels of about 3 metres are expected tonight with the 3am high
tide. Higher flood levels to 4.5 metres (major) are expected with the high tide
on Wednesday afternoon (3pm). River rises will continue into Thursday with
levels higher than 1974 expected. The 1974 flood peak was 5.45 metres at the
Brisbane City gauge."

BOM have just released new predictions. Perhaps I should eat my words as Thursday sounds rather serious!!!

Well it certainly means the end of their water restrictions..
Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
They probably won't have to drink recycled water either. Although a decent reverse osmosis treatment plant could come in very handy in a lot of places around there.
3 months ago water was being pumped from Wivenhoe to bolster Toowoomba's water supplies...

And I'm still trying to work out where the feck I'm going to surf this weekend!!!!
Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
somewhere to the south, I'd suggest. The Bruce to the Sunny Coast will probably still be closed intermittently.

Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
Ya reckon? Due to floods still or damaged roads? I would have thought the flood waters would be receding come the weekend?alakaboo wrote:The Bruce to the Sunny Coast will probably still be closed intermittently.
Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
yeah, you're probably right. the coastal creeks rise and fall rapidly.
I'm just thinking back to when I did monitoring in those creeks and we could have equipment that we couldn't get to for more than a week.

Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
Don, I share your concern...I think the main problem will be the damaged roads..
With near 6ft offshore swell predicted for both Saturday and Sunday, I will paddle there if I have to.

thankgod,,,another person with a brain...the sheer panic may well end up causing more deaths and hardship than the actual floodsDonweather wrote:Granted the devastation in Toowoomba and surroduning areas yesterday is catastrophic as well as the floods up in Central and Western Qld, however today's frenzy in Brisbane is just inducing pandemonium and paranoia. Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
Took me 12 minutes to get home this evening from the CBD to Mitchelton. Fastest time ever even in school holidays!!! Was like I was driving at 4am or something. Got every green light and was only a handful of other punters on the road.
Guess I gotta thank the media hype bullshit for at least allowing me an easy drive home!!!

Re: Is this the end of the world? Or at least Qld?
I don't like scare mongering either and hizzoner Cambell Newman seems to like the publicity however, I understand some of the issues with sending people home early. Glad you didn't have far to travel Don. I drove from Beenleigh out the Logan Motorway to the Centenary Highway then to Kenmore and across to Kedron then back to Beenleigh today. Three hour trip ending about 12.30. Nightmare and plenty of roads closed. Then from Beenleigh to Corinda (to stay with my son). There are so many roads under water I would have advised people to go home early just to get them off the roads as soon as possible.
And I guess the authorities are a bit spooked by what happened in Toowoomba. If they aren't seen to take this action and disaster happens they'll cop shit and possibly law suits) from all comers.
Difficult call to make I agree and probably driven more by legal opinions than meteorologists' observations.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

^^^^^ Yeah Trev don't get too caught up in the hype....
Here's a quote from Digger from FB.
"ha ha, we had snakes wash up onto our back verandah with this flooding and the kids arent allowed in the back pool, in mean back yard.
oh yes, one more thing, GO THE BLUES......"
Doesn't sound like he's too concerned Trev.. Food for thought there.
