San Francisco

San Francisco is certainly my favourite city in the USA. The people are friendly, especially to tourists. You can do without a car as the public transport's so good. Everyone seems to live a harmonious existence. It doesn't have the egotism and shallowness of cities such as LA. It's especially fun i...

I did it myself successfully in the '70's

I did it myself but it was a bloody long time ago (30 years). Not hard to do as long as you are patient, plan it, and have all the right gear: Foam blank, saw, metal files, sanding blocks (you don't necessarily need an electric sander), resin, hardener, fibreglass sheet, paint brushes and pre-fab fi...

Margaret river - moses rock - anyone surfed it

I went to Margaret River for a holiday last December. Never got a chance to surf Moses Rock but it looked like it had potential.
Anyone surfed there?
What's it like?

HIre a taxi with a driver

Went to Bali in 1997. For $40 a day (this was before their currency crashed) you can hire a taxi with a driver for an entire day. He will take you anywhere you want to go. He will wait for you as long as you want him to (eg. if you want to surf Ulu for a few hours he will wait for you). He puts up w...

Question for bigfat1

Bigfat1. I went to Maregaret River for a holiday last December. The surfshop guy recommended Moses Rock but I tried Honeycombs instead - good fun beachbreaks. Have you ever surfed Moses Rock? It looks to me like it would have some potential for a long left handed point break?

I saw the guys on the flowrider at Fox Studios about 2 years ago also. The pro surfers such as Beau Emerton and Luke Egan didn't do as well as the pro "flowriders" whose names I cant' recall. Probably because it's a different technique using a snowboard size "surfboard". And the wipeouts - if they l...

Surfed with the retired pro Derek Hynd also. He turns up sometimes at Mona Vale and the Basin with his gun, even in small surf. Always catches every wave he paddles for, seemingly effortlessly, unlike us mere mortals.

Layne joined me and a few others at the Poles not long after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks when the pro circuit was temporarily stopped. Despite some others' comments on this website I found her to be a perfect ambassador to the sport, giving us all our space, not dropping in or snaking and being ge...

Don't want to be a spoiler but wasn't Kauai the island where Bethany Hamilton got her arm bitten off?

BROKE HIS BOARD

Unlike Taj Burrow who accidentally creased his board on a wave after wiping out, Slater intentionally smashed his board when he got back to the beach after his losing quarter-final against the winning Pat (Endless Summer 11) O'Connell. Apparently Slater was -issed-off about his last wave not countin...

Rescued one at Palmy

Years ago on an onshore afternoon (small waves) I was at South Palm and heard screaming as did another guy in the lineup. We ignored it for a few minutes thinking it was just kids having fun (seems to be a common thought judging from the other posts). We had earlier seen 2 girls swimming near the po...

remember knockers 6 times world champ!

Remember you knockers, as Clint Eastwood said "Opinions are like a--holes, everyone has one". Your'e entitled to your opinions but we cannot dispute the fact that she is 6 times world champion so must be pretty good. Iv'e had the pleasure of surfing with her at the Poles. She is not a swell head, al...

Wer'e in the shark's territory

These tragedies sadly remind one that when surfing you are in the shark's domain. I heard that earlier this week a surfer was attacked by a shark near Capetown. Apparently it severed one leg and badly mauled the other. There had been earler warnings of a rogue shark in the area. But for the grace of...

What's a good website for up to date ASP results eg. Bells ?

What's the best website for me to locate up to date ASP rankings, current form and results of contests. I am especially keen on following the Bells Beach Easter Classic.

Let's stop the Beachley bashing!!!

Sure Layne got beaten. But she also put Andy Irons off his game and he was eliminated - more room for the Aussies! Let's stop this Beachley bashing - she is the GREATEST EVER women's surfer - the female counterpart to the legendary Kelly Slater. And she has good manners in the surf - unlike Nat, TC ...

Double Island Point I believe is where Nat & Co went - its' on the way to Fraser Island. And they can have it too - the place is infested with sharks.
