Most probably Surf Forecast uses the most relevant wave buoy data to generate the kJ forecasts (or maybe its part of the buoy data anyway). That wouldn't work for longer forecast periods though, so they must also be using other generic data sources (that Steve would know off the top of his head). It...

It's the energy that matters, not the height. Most people I talk to are quite conversent with kJs. Less relevant on the Oz East Coast I guess as we rarely get enough fetch to generate massive kljs of power. Good conditions today 2000kJ/6' now, jumping to 4000kJ/8' soon (some sets gonna be double overhead I reckon). Only 15 out the front and 10 further down. Crowded at Padang, starting to fire.

Solid swell today 2.2m, 2,200kJ, light offshore, 2.8m high tide, 0 low, now pretty low and very heavy if you get caught inside.

30 out, better than the 100 plus this morning. Similar conditions predicted for the next 5 days.
