Re: Where did you surf today ?

No, the forecasts are often different or the same as required but still not always correct.

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Not the nearest. Think about where your swells are coming from cranked. Haha! Perth or the Bukit? The nearest wave buoy for the Bukit is 3000km away at Albatross Bay (info from SurfForcaste). Must be a virtual one I guess. They are pretty accurate a lot of the time on the Bukit, sometimes even hour...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Most probably Surf Forecast uses the most relevant wave buoy data to generate the kJ forecasts (or maybe its part of the buoy data anyway). That wouldn't work for longer forecast periods though, so they must also be using other generic data sources (that Steve would know off the top of his head). It...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

You only have to check your local Steve, Surf Forcast was calling Lennox Head around 110kJ today and predicting around 170kJ tomorrow.

Oh, I just realised you did just that, your numbers, 153-108-75, were your local kJs!

So yeah, that means waves of a foot or two, suitable for a mal

Re: Where did you surf today ?

I remember the big swell that hit Ulus about 5 years ago. It was magnificent, at 30,000kJ. What a magnificent number, an incredible amount expended by each wave. Today was 4,000kJ. Wave height is a very bad measure of a wave, it's a linear measure of what is in fact an order of magnitude phenomena, ...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

I'm trying to get a sense of what it is measuring though, to see how it can be extrapolated to other breaks. I check (and surf) several breaks daily, as well as rockfish. If I can understand what it is measuring in terms of observations- I can start to calibrate it for various breaks. Maybe it just...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Its not something I really concentrate on. Canggu would be an ideal spot for that though.

Re: Where did you surf today ?

If you know what's causing the difference there's no need for kJs. In what context? I see it whenever I check the swell forecasts so it's ingrained in my head. In the Surf Forcast blurb: "If you surf the same spot regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table eac...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Went and checked out Ulus. As an example, the Bombie is 3m, 4000kJ. The tide is way too high, there's only 4 or 5 surfers on each break. Anyone serious will be waiting for the super low tide around sunset. The amount or water moving around is ridiculous, low tide will but a stop to that. Will be int...

What sort of surf would you expect from a 100kJ Cranked?

Just general, ballpark.
Not much.

Here's a break in Thailand that has that sort of energy ATM:

Re: Where did you surf today ?

It's the energy that matters, not the height. Most people I talk to are quite conversent with kJs. Less relevant on the Oz East Coast I guess as we rarely get enough fetch to generate massive kljs of power. A measure of energy will more equate with what you are going to be able to do on a wave, so ...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Just watching at my local, second swell hasn't hit yet. 30 out.
Padang working OK.
Someone told me Ulus was huge with no-one out. I'll have to go verify that one

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Sent this surf report to a mate:

Good conditions today 2000kJ/6' now, jumping to 4000kJ/8' soon (some sets gonna be double overhead I reckon). Only 15 out the front and 10 further down. Crowded at Padang, starting to fire.

Today a 2.6m high and a 0.0 low, that's a lot of water moving in or out in under 6 hours

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Solid swell today 2.2m, 2,200kJ, light offshore, 2.8m high tide, 0 low, now pretty low and very heavy if you get caught inside.

30 out, better than the 100 plus this morning. Similar conditions predicted for the next 5 days.
