Does anyone have any suggestions within 6 hours or so of Sydney? Looking for a week at Xmas but will need to book early I guess....

I'll be in S France all August & early Sept as well. Lacanau is the closest break for me, surfed it once before & it was pretty good. Which is best? As a newbie I understand that in general, you'd want a solid wave height as well as period but I'm not 100% clear on which is more 'important' Does, period correlate with 'power' whereas swell with size?
