I'm on the goldie right now, have been all week and the water is 21+. Boardies no worries. Maybe a wettie top in the early. This however does not stop Goldie people from putting on steamers. Why would you if you didn't have to?

Thanks everyone! Much appreciated.

I loved the Jetstar anecdote, Filthbarrel, what a lovable airline it is. How I will try to avoid it forever.

Anyone been charged for boards on Qantas?

I hope you all don't mind me asking for help in researching a story. Been following up on the ongoing dangers to surfers travelling with board bags in the wake of Ms Corby's troubles. In the process I've had a couple of reports that Qantas has suddenly begun cracking down on surfboard bags -- chargi...

Hi Booter, I'm sure it's different for everyone. Soooo many variables. Is the board dramatically different from your old one? Is it only subtly different (can make it even harder because you don't adjust for the change in your mind)? I've had boards I've known like brothers from the third wave and o...

I reckon you're right wanto, that kind of clumsy crowdthink is f**king ugly sometimes ... you sense it's been responsible for some of the human race's worst moments. It's misdirected emotional energy. Reading and listening to people demanding their tsunami donations back, for instance -- it might be...

wanto I wonder if when people say they're thinking of "nothing" what they really mean is: they're thinking of nothing other than riding the wave. That's true for me anyway, I just think about the wave and my board and what it's all feeling like... good? positive? kooked out? wrong? fast? slow? balan...

And how many of us will watch Today Tonight this evening? And buy the Daily Telegraph tomorrow? The Schapelle media bombing is at least partly an unspoken conspiracy between those lower-than-dog media pack members and millions of helplessly prurient Australians, ensnared by their prejudices, their m...

Re the Big Southern Hemi storms... Often old Indo-traveling bastards will muse to themselves why the hell all the best swells seem to come early in the season. One contributing factor is the size of the Antarctic ice-cap. As the seasons flex, the ice-cap grows and recedes its rim, sometimes by sever...

pros don't give a shit about wax brands. Most of 'em use whatever is given away at the latest contest. Tail pads matter more.

Mrs Palmers for me cos it's got a hard flat edge -- makes applying easier. Sex Wax, the joke wore off in about 1982. Truth is a waxcomb is the real business.

too early to tell I'd reckon. Several surfers will have peak moments in the next few events. After J-Bay the chances of a winner coming from outside the top six or seven will tighten very quickly. Nobody's really kicking everyone's arse. Kelly's had his peak with that 20/20 at Teahupoo. Trent's had ...

Reckon it's a good predictor of big swells -- watch how much sand's built up on your local beach. Specially in May. If the beach is gagging on sand around this time of year, you know it's gonna get cleaned out soon.

I don't know about "men" ... I feel like a rag doll after five hours of that shit. There'll be a few inadvertent nose-dribbles in the Carroll household tonight.

Already now the swell's dropping. Gonna be some weird but cool sandbanks around after this methinks. Go get 'em everyone!!

Outside Newport Reef, aka the Outside Path, right NOW, TODAY, this MORNING, 10-12 feet, reflecting off the rim of the reef tip and almost impossible to catch. Right NOW. All those silly people bitching about surf spot exposure on the northern beaches, it's the best day of the decade at one of the sp...

Well I didn't necessarily mean "others". What's the classic Aussie definition of "wanker"? It's bunging on a bit of a self-regarding act, as if to say "i'm the cream! Check me out!" It's occasion for a bit of light hearted fun, especially when the Wanker's act comes unstuck, as it so often does. Gua...

I'm with country bumpkin. "Crosswaves", yeah, right! Come on out the Path! Come out the tip in the next 10 foot east swell! Sure you will! See ya there! And Rockpools, like nobody's ever surfed there until recently. That would come as amusing news to the Simpson brothers. Who are they? Don't know? I...

Now I can see why you wanna give up surfing, BB. All I could say to you is that it doesn't have to be that way. Surfing is either irrevocably damaged for us all, or it's endlessly renewable for us all. Either way you've got to give something up -- on the one hand, surfing, on the other hand, being "...

Hi BB, I'm not washing my hands of a thing. I'm a believer in personal accountability, I sign all my articles and take the heat when they suck, I wish I was better at what I do for gods sake, or more able to influence the big surf companies to spend some of that marketing money in ways that reflect ...
