Re: little pluggy thing in Epoxy boards

You only need to put in a valve for boards with really low EPS density cores. Surftechs and Bics have low density cores but they're completey wrapped in a sandwich of high density foam and glass (which is why they're so rigid) Firewire's FST, Sunovas and JD's construction method all have wooden rail...

What about tagging and tracking SUP riders? the tag could be attached to their scrotums to make it difficult to remove.

Re: Ripping off Dane Reynolds.

oh yeah, those pro surfers don't influence design at all hey). I think pro surfing has been massively influential on design up until about 5 years ago? when the design progression stopped. Shapers arrived at a basic design for performance that has remained unchanged. But at that point the design ha...

Re: Ripping off Dane Reynolds.

All this shorter, flatter, wider and quad stuff - what some might call a design revolution has been progressing for years and it has had absolutely nothing to do with professional surfers - Kelly and Dane have arrived at the tail end of the whole trend. All of these designs have been generated by sh...

Re: Byron Bay Carnage

From what I read Pascal was hit by a pointed nose, all that energy concentrated in a small area, bound to do some serious damage. We all know the pointy nose is purely cosmetic. This is an opportunity for the board building industry to do something to make line ups safer- just round off the last inc...

Re: flat decks....

The last two boards I made have flat decks but blended so the flat bit is about 5 " either side of the centre line. You can't really see the deck is flat unless you lay a straight edge on the board. Both boards are 2 1/16" at the thickest point so the rails aren't fat. One's a thruster, the other is...

Re: Length and Volume

This whole volume/paddling thing seems to have a lot of people flumoxed. It's actually pretty simple - when you paddle you don't want to push water. The closer a surface is to right angles to the direction of movement, the more its going to push water. So the greater the bottom angle at the entry po...

Re: Kelly Slater's Wizard's Sleeve (and the like)

i'm pretty sure that the board in the final was a copy of maurice cole board. which is fine i guess all shapers take "inspiration" from others, but what shits me is that when asked about it he said it was an adapted flyer. if your going to ride a shapers board and then base your board around its de...

Re: Six channels

Pinhead I think channels and parabolic rails would work against each other. Channels like the centre line certainty of a stringer down the guts. Yes possibly, that's why I'm thinking quad. the channels would stiffen the bottom skin though, in the way corrogations stiffen corrogated iron. So you mig...

Re: Six channels

Josh, a six channel shooter with no parabolic stringer (due to production issues) but timber deck as the stringer? In epoxy of course. Do-able ?? I don't know how Josh does his - a fair bit of secret sauce no doubt - but you could do channels in a sandwich construction with parabolic rails - but it...

Re: Forecasting Vic

It's worth studying all this stuff in depth to get a bit of an edge on the pack. Swellnet or Coastalwatch call a good day and everyones on it. However knowing a bit about local effects and what conditions suit fickle or less popular breaks can help you score good uncrowded waves. Some weather patter...

Re: Worth a few cents...

OK - I'm going to disagree with Mr Banks here - and this has got nothing to do with the quality of design, craftsmanship or the effort and commitment of the shaper, whether it's JB or anyone else. I don't think a performance PU/PE board is under priced at $700 in fact they are probably over priced. ...

At last something more annoying than the SUP

I've been pondering how I could piss off the SUP riders who hog peaks from time to time when I'm out surfing. I was thinking I needed something that would catch anything that moves, from further out than those pricks could manage. I don't care how ridiculous or impractical and generally unfun this i...
