Re: Where did you surf today ?
@ctd This place is no secret, documented on surf websites. South of Shanghai. You have to really know the formula though as is hard to get good. Thanks, interesting info. I spent several years in HK and many trips over to China, although not for surfing. At the time (early 2000s) the HK 'crew' was ...

Where is that (hardly a secret spot with all those houses). It looks almost familar, but I guess most of the Sth Coast looks the same really.Tally wrote:Sth Coast trip a few years ago

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Some amazing beach breaks along the way with not a single person out within miles.....and not a single surfboard in the boat  lot of marine life on the move up north :-o That does sound interesting - was it for any particular purpose or just because? I've done a boat trip from Batemans Bay up ...

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Zhujiajian has had waves all week.. Is that as in just south of Shanghai? Or is it some local break I've just never heard of If the former, whats 'the vibe'? As in, number, type, quality of surfing, water quality (brown like the rest of the China sea?) and that stuff. Is surfing starting to gain tr...

Re: 6'10" McCoy Nugget
How do you find this board in the average Sth Coast beach break? I have a mini mal type board for smaller waves, but its not great on bigger (shoulder/head high+) or steeper (low tide waves), so how did you find the nugget in these conditions - will it complement the mini mal or is it more of a mini...

I just looked that up; the Outerbanks are a weird land formation.Nick Carroll wrote:The part of the USA's coast that reminded me most of Australia is Cape Hatteras.

Re: Patellar snapped in half.
Perhaps you need one of the larger NSP longboards - suggest the 11ft one - 11'0'' x 25 3/4'' x 4 1/16'' (yes, 25 3/4!) Or if you are feeling good, the 10'2'' x 24'' x 3 1/2'' http://www.surfindustries.com/surfboards/nsp_longboards.php :-D-: :-D-: More seriously, good luck - must be frustrating the h...

Potentially would not have assisted in this particular tragedy, but "Surfing NSW’s free CPR and board rescue course, Surfers Rescue 24/7" has released its training schedule for the rest of this year. Several sessions around Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong. http://www.surfersrescue247.com/2014/07/30...

Re: Ask Carroll
Thanks heaps Nick. Thinking about it a bit more, I suspect you are totally right on the first point - I may not be breathing out all the way. Even though I feel 'short of breath' as if I had breathed out, as you say, probably I'm not taking in a full breath to start off with. I will have to swim aga...

Re: Ask Carroll
Nick Fairfax travel section today had a story mentioning a charity that aims to teach Balinese orpans self awareness and confidence through lessons in surfing, yoga, meditation and English Which of these pursuits will give the orphans the most self confidence? Or are we merely teaching them how to s...

Re: Ask Carroll
... does anyone listen to music while surfing? Yeah, I do. I get shitty top 40 stuff trapped in my head or ad jingles or other inconsequential shit. As opposed to Slayer, I'll get some Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry. Oh god, I can tell today's surf will be accompanied by Firework. Thanks ctd. I once ran...

Re: Ask Carroll
ctd how about you put aside the whole iPod underwater idea and listen to the water instead. Amazing noises while you swim. Reduce the noises and increase efficiency. I cant hear the water over my puffing and grunting. My problem with swimming is that it never feels good, I'm always struggling. My w...

Re: Ask Carroll
Dude, not while swimming. Don't even try it. Why not? I pool swim, rarely more than 3 in the lane (including me). Or is it not a safety thing? Or just not worth the money? Or it is like being a SUP-er? Do chin-ups. Very effective for increasing paddling velocity. Love pulls ups/chin ups, so no prob...

Re: Ask Carroll
ah I think the swimming thing is probably better, it holds an aerobic base while using a lot of paddle-associated muscles in a water environment. So if it's a choice, that's the better one. Thanks - I knew you were going to say that. I just find swimming boring. Has anyone used/tried waterproof mp3...

Daiwa shitts all over Shimano these days, but Penn makes the best blue collar bang for buck reels. I have a couple of Penns but they always seem just a bit too heavy. I actually havent bought a new reel for several years so all my opinions are based on the market as of 4-7 years ago - Shimano, a co...

Re: Ask Carroll
Noticed the same thing Brendo. After 18 years away what struck me most was the number of helmets being worn these days. Used to be only little kids in them but now there seems more helmets than not. Is this the Michael Schumacher effect or has the take up been going on for longer? All the ski schoo...
