Re: Twin fins as go-to boards

Used to have a twinny, and experienced mix results at the time (some good, some not so) and had since forgotten and lost interest in them. Until I recently found one that grabbed my attention. And now it's the board I surf most. This one is a recent shape (Nigel Beckham) and is nothing like a typica...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

My local. South end, wind affected but bowly rights on dusk. Almost headhigh on the sets, and wackable. Pretty consistent too. Way better than anywhere on the entire Illawarra stretch today. What a waste of time and petrol that was  .

Re: Crowds.

Surfed snapper again a few months back for the first time in many years. Man what a circus . So many clowns just kidding themselves by trying to paddle the deepest behind the suck rock. Out of about 20, about 3 were actually catching waves, and the rest were either not going for waves, or the ones t...

Re: Crowds.

Best way to combat summer crowds is to NOT buy one of those silly stumpy standup boogyboard type surfboards, but to get a bigger longer board, mid length or 9ft+. be greedy, out paddle everyone :) sit further out and get in earlier. Or sit in closer and just milk the bejesus out of anything resembli...

Re: Crowds.

Beachies - favour swell direction over wind protection. Example, at my regular- Onshore winds but east swell ??? Fk I'm out there !! Points - don't sit the deepest but sit in where u catch the smaller double ups or ones that slip thru Reefs - be out at first light, or find a hard to scope or access ...

Re: why go so short?

I'm 5ft 9in/70kgs ....... the 5'8 goes much better.......... What size boards are you talking about when you say "surfing on way-too-short boards. you're pretty light, and that board's only an inch shorter than you. and it's flatter, wider, and probably has more volume than your bigger shortboards....

Re: why go so short?

Only 83 kg of pen pushing goodness here mate. And prob 6'0 is as short as I'd care to go on a board before detriment outweighs benefit. Saw some goose riding what looked to be a 5'2 this morning. Pure comedy. This stand up booger nonsense is on par with how retarded boards were early to mid 90's. re...

Correct me.

They do not have to be THAT short to work as planning hulls though?
Exactly

Re: why go so short?

this morning was another good example of seeing droves of shitty surfing on way-too-short boards. getting in too late, too flat, stop-start surfing, and not being able to retain a proper line throughout the entire length of the wave. the only ones retaining speed and momentum and a decent line throu...

Re: why go so short?

all those way stumpy way flat boards simply don't do what they say on the tin anywhere near as good as they claim to. volume counts in small waves. if you can't generate speed thru compression rail-to-rail with what the wave is providing, then you need float speed with what the board's providing. si...

Re: why go so short?

look 8, i'm sure it'd probably go ok on certain waves. and i'm sure u have fun on it. but on the whole, i'm not convinced that those dumpy little models are going to be any more suited to small/tiny waves than just keeping to a reasonable length and adding the extra volume (foil/thickness throughout...

Re: why go so short?

2 to 3 inches shorter I do get . But this extreme reduction of length I don't get . Every shaper seems to be making a mole cricket model or some such . But by and large they look shit and surf shit . And could only perform in such small conditions , if at all well . Going a bit shorter works well si...

Re: why go so short?

You don't see any of the really ridiculously short, wide, flat boards going rail to rail or vertical in the pocket unless a pro is riding them. They're all out on the wave face going past the wave's energy, which is why you see such shit surfing on them. Exactly. 90% of them are basically surfing b...

Re: why go so short?

Fair play. I can appreciate why it could be ok to go a touch shorter , but lopping 8 inches to a foot off seems questionable if not pointless . In knee to chest high conditions or any wave that lacks punch , floatation speed gained thru increased volume alone should be enough to compensate . Also, w...

why go so short?

why go so short? is it really that necessary or beneficial? be that in tiny or mid ranged waves. i'm not convinced about the 'new thing' of boards trending towards being shorter (i.e a 5'9 that's basically a 6'4 cut down but has the same volume etc) why not just surf a longer board? it has more driv...
