There's been a few. One early one dates from my grommethood in 1972 when, for some reason I still can't fathom, my non-surfing older sister offered to take me and my best mate on our first real surf trip up the coast. After being chased out of the water by a shark at Crescent Head the previous eveni...

I'm seriously considering going back to the olden days method of turning up at the beach each morning and going for a surf if it's good ... getting hyped up over the forecasts and chatter is doin' my head in at the moment ... :? Ah, for the good old pre-internet surf forecast and surf cam days when...

I'm calling Wednesday of next week, SUPERB
I'm calling it a hoax.

MHL wave data shows that period and size is already dropping. Eden looks to have spiked this morning.

Isn't it shoulder hopper :?: :?: Well that's what we used to call them anyway. Or is a shoulder snaker somewhere between a shoulder hopper and a full on snaker? - good enough to come in closer to the takeoff zone but not good enough to sit right on it? Has a new word been added to surfing's lexicon?

I prefer this story about the "tide turning against California's surfboard makers" - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/tide-turns-against-californias-surfboard-makers-847846.html Is the world getting over the surfing craze? Will crowds start thinning as the hordes move onto the next b...

Re: Note to Boardriders Clubs

As much as people think localism is bad or whatever it still exists I fail to see how anyone who thinks they are local aren't involved with the club even if they don't compete.... WTF! Now you aren't a local unless you join the board riders club? Geez I must have missed the meeting where that motio...

Looked like there were two boardriders contests on at Manly on Saturday, one at Nth Steyne and one at Queenie. Neither bothered me particularly but maybe it might be an idea if they had been run on different days. I've seen up to three separate comps being run along the Longy to Dee Why stretch on t...

i don't know what fascism really means If you want it from the horse's mouth you could check out 'The Doctrine of Fascism' by Benito Mussolini at http://www.worldfuturefund.org/wffmaster/Reading/Germany/mussolini.htm. I think "fascism" basically means the subjugation of all individual rights by and...

I'd like to know what the supposedly "exploited" workers in developing countries who are paid 60c to produce a pair of boardshorts thought about the whole situation. 60c a pop might be (probably is) a relatively good return, especially if you're pumping out quite a few pairs of shorts every day. It ...

The "less is more" Bauhaus approach to architecture originated in the Weimar Republic of 1920s and 1930s Germany. The Weimar Republic led directly to the rise of the National Socialists, AKA Nazi Party. The Nazi Party pretty much wrote the book on the fascist aesthetic. Ergo "less is more" leads to ...

"Tim Winton is massively overrated. No, but Peter Carey is. At least with Winton you get the sense that he is writing from lived experience, which I think is essential for all great writing. Carey's writing, on the other hand, seems all made up, like an overlong commercial. It's not convincing. Win...

"Tim Winton is massively overrated. His recent novels are not bad, but no better than not bad. His early work is fcuking awful, but its reputation basks undeservedly in the critical glow cast upon the later novels. He's yet another Australian artist whose popularity reflects the infantile need for ...

Heard it was out but didn't know it dealt with surfing. Really love Winton's writing, even the slightly flowery 'Cloudstreet'. Reckon he's the best Aussie writer around at the moment (craps all over the likes of Peter Carey). 'Dirt Music' was a classic and 'The Riders' really saw him come of age. I'...

but these people seem to like the office environment and socialising so they end up spending excessive time at the office achieving f’ck all anyway There's a bit of that where I am as well. Yer, it was about the same time the smarty-pants pundits started forecasting the paperless office.

That didn't work either.

Surfing isn't art for many people, I wouldn't think, but it feels like it gets pretty close for a few. It is hard to think of surfers who, in terms of actually riding a wave, you could describe as artists. Curren is definitely right near the top of the list. I'd also include Midget, another superb ...

I'd be careful with the doxy. The side-effects can vary wildly from individual to individual. I've seen people go bright red from heightened photo-sensitivity. In extreme cases it can lay you out.

Malarone has fewer side-effects. Unfortunately it's a lot more expensive.
