Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

[ The bypass operation is now moving around 480,000 cu. m., which is about what the engineers estimate naturally sweeps up from NSW and across the Tweed mouth each year. Chances of breaking the contract: zero. Chances it'll be renewed down the track: even. But political pressure could change the na...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

The current contract between McConnell-Dowell and the NSW Govt runs for 25 years. It commenced operations in 2001.
So 2026 will be the end of the contract.
D-bah is a man-made beach but it pumped pre bypass.

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

thats a 64 dollar question and depends on who you talk to. Morning of the Earth and the MP section at Kirra is pre-groyne. I've just received some footage of MP and Rabbit at Kirra 1975 just post- Big Groyne surfing 6-8 tubes that makes your spine tingle. Full below sea-level grinders on singlefins ...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

And at the moment the situation is pretty stable. Yes, and it's worth taking a quick snapshot. In the middle of another cyclone season with the worlds best wave (or at least top 5) lying buried under millions of cubic metres of sand. The Superbank just a shadow of it's former self. Very ordinary ba...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

I'd say they would be stoked. An outlet at North Kirra/Tugun would create a South Straddy style beachbreak in a very favourably aligned stretch of coast. I doubt it would have any direct effect on the sandbank at Burleigh. The current sandbar at Currumbin has been diabolical for at least 6 months. H...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

... while all along, surfers have had absolutely no say in any of it. The pumpers have already slowed the pumping rate -- over time (probably two years) you'll see a difference at Kirra from this. But they could do more. Question is, will they even pay attention? Not exactly true Nick, if you follo...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

I have a hard time seeing anything different in 'old' Kirra (post breakwall) and today's lowtide Greenmount. They both produce the goods in a very similar way. You obviously don't live anywhere near the Goldy nor-easter, because low-tide Greenmount over 4 foot is breaking out near the shark nets. I...

Re: Kirra as she used to be - 1995

The real tragedy of the loss of Kirra is the loss of the regions finest big-wave spot. Big Groyne Kirra would hold Hawaiian style 8-10 foot tubes on a high tide. The Super-wank is breaking out near the shark nets when it's over 4 foot. I'd drive up from Lennox to surf Kirra on a cyclone swell....the...

79-84 is the Lazor Zap era. In 1980's "Follow the Sun" Cheyne rode a 5'8" Zap at 15 foot Waimea. Mid 70's McCoy would most likely be a double bump soft swallow single fin. Superbly functional surfboard. Geoff hasn't changed a bit. It's still his way or the highway. Most functional surfboard I ever h...

Hey Don , how much did you say a trip to the Solomons would cost? hahahaaaaa. Interesting to note the twin cyclogenesis in the SIO at the moment. Would love to hazard a guess but seeing as I already have egg on my face from calling a proper cyclone season and it's almost Jan over and no sign of one ...

Isn't Larry Blair a chef at Terrigal? Larry Blair lives at Ocean Shores and Bali. Has married one of Mandiras' (warung owner at Canggu) daughters and has a couple of kids to her. He's doing well and surfs bloody excellently, especially at over-sized Outside Corner. Still rides McCoys. Bylesy had a ...

Not quite correct. HDV can be captured to a drive/firestore or flash based memory device.
ie it's not strictly a tape based format.
Be interesting to see how the upcoming Scarlet stacks up.

Re: Remote Controlled Helicopter Surf Camera

, although HDV does have trouble keeping up with fast moving action but as it most probably wont be seen on the big screen the inadequacies will be difficult to spot for most punters. Red Code raw is a variable bitrate wavelet codec, more like JPEG 2000. Lossy, sure, but nowhere near HDV which is a...

Re: Remote Controlled Helicopter Surf Camera

New developments in small HD "pov cams" eg Sony HXR-MC1P.....will provide a missing link for this kind of crash cam application. Easy to build a water-proof housing for and run continously. Still need to have the budget to write a few off though. Holy shitte that is phukn amazingly crisp. A fully ki...
