Stop the stoke, no more beginners!

I got a note from a chap named Sebastian today and it got me thinking... here's what he said: Don can you please stop encouraging all these imbeciles to start surfing. Its already way to crowded, too dangerous and too f'ing cliched, "oh i want to learn to surf it looks sooo cool". I will make one ex...

Whimper - check this Rincon footage from last month

I didn't need to see this video on surfline... classic fun winter Rincon with Tom Curren and others...

Final follow up: the FCS racks which thread through the cabin, worked fine. We had a current model Tarago and I found that you could put the back rack straps through behind the rearmost travel of the sliding door mechanism. The front racks were threaded through at leading top corners of the sliding ...

Snorkeling spots around Sydney

Hey all, given this interminable flat spell, I've been casting around for reasons to get in the water... anyway, as lots of you will know, Barry and I had a preliminary snorkle around north curly the other day and we're stoked. So, I thought I'd start a thread for people to tip off their fave snorke...

fyi: a quick glance at Nat Young's surf guide lists the following spots around Jervis Bay: Peels Reef, Callala Bay, Plantation Point & Wreck Bay.
Mark Warren adds Moona Moona Creek near Huskisson and Caves Beach (two bays west of Pipe).

PC footage in Don's possession

Apropos PC, I happen to have 16mm footage of him surfin' various places and even have a sequence of one of his famous turning 360s at Dee Why. The flick is an hour long and has more MP than I've seen anywhere else, plus there's Fitz, Shaun, MR, Horan & others (half-hour of it is from the first stubb...

This surf brand thing is one of my little hobby horses too. From a strictly selfish point of view, I'd like to see some of the big boys putting a little of their media spend into websites like ours. That said, I also have a contradictory feeling that maybe it's better not to have them on the site be...

hey all :)
If there's no real interest in a women's section, that's no prob with me. As noted, it's up there without any restrictions on who can post. If there's no interest after a decent interval, I'll take it down again. No intention to patronise anyone. -Don

Just to let ya know, this is a perennial request. :D And maybe some day we'll get it together to organise somethin'... Personally, I'd like to see a contest where the focus was on fun. Here's my idea... Form teams with some sort of beach or local affiliation (eg Northy, 'bra, Queensie, whatever). Ea...

I saw SIL on Weds in Nambucca Heads, so I'm now in a position to comment knowledgably on it. Yank-centric? You betcha buddy. My reaction was that it was largely unconsciously so, and annoying as that can sometimes be, I felt it came from a good-hearted attitude. The Vietnam thing felt a bit c...

You won't believe this but...

Just before I bailed for my little family holiday up at Scotts Head, I asked RealSurf's Shari is she thought a women's only forum on RealSurf would be a good idea. I can easily make it a members-only thing if you wish. Everybody could read it, but only approved members could post and reply. I'll set...

toyota rack prob

uther wrote:get soft racks-they hook into the doorframe.
I looked at a tarago this morning and can't see how the racks can hook on to the top of the door frame as it is almost vertical (being located on the outer edge of the roof). Have you actually done this? If softracks worked, that'd be great.

How to carry boards on rental Toyota Tarago?

I'm hauling my family off on a week's trip to Scott's Head and I'm renting a Tarago to do it. Is there any way to get boards on top of one of these things if it doesn't have racks?

Your favourite North side (Sydney) beach?

As webmaster, I get the "which beach is best" question all the time. Now that we have a forum, I figure this is the place to put the topic up for discussion and comment. Which beach do you reckon is Sydney's best? FWIW, I like the Bower the best of all. Surge take-offs... I love 'em! BTW, we could r...

Surf Rage

I think Nick Carroll's piece in Pittwater Life on the annual confected outrage in the media about 'surf rage' was right on the money. (You can read the article by going here: http://www.realsurf.com/news/newsitem.php?id=413 I haven't seen a fight in years, and even shouting matches are one in ten go...
