Re: fast waves
Ah whoops, yep you are right guys it's 1.3  And the one day a southerly swell doesn't rock up the whole realsurf crew are out surfing and having a get together :( You get some good waves over the last couple of days? I had some great fun at a protected northern beaches corner yesterday. Peaky,...

Cummon Dug, I'm probably gonna loose that because Longinus has actually been on real battleships
We need a more evenly weighted game to sort this out. How about Snakes and Ladders

Re: fast waves
Haha, yeah right Longi. I learnt that from Uni and I when I saw it misused I thought I would point it out, so maybe in the future you can give a better explanation to people... As for giving away Deadmans and Winki, you're the one that has it on a website with a pinpoint on it  To say you are ...

Re: fast waves
Oh and here's a post I did regarding the Tsunami warning back in July last year that I think Longy was trying to copy the maths from... Nice calculations AZ, I did some quickly myself and they seem to be similar to yours.. Geek talk, but for anyone interested and for future use there is a quick calc...

Re: fast waves
Yes Darryl, but here is Longy's maths...
Speed = squareroot ( 10x 13 ) = 11.4
Now that's 11.4 m/s
Not 11.4 knots as he has said
11.4 m/s converted to knots is 22knots
See what I'm getting at...

Re: fast waves
Firstly the deep water wave equation wave speed = squareroot(depth x gravity) is in m/s not knots! Speed given in m/s is about 50% slower than the same number in knots and it saves people having to know their 60 times table to work it out. You cannot change the standard units of the result of an eq...

Re: fast waves
Longinus, I just saw your article posted to Bansai and Surfing Atlas and it's basically this thread re-hashed.. I have to say there are so many errors in this thing that people will become worse off for reading it. Firstly the deep water wave equation wave speed = squareroot(depth x gravity) is in m...

Re: Genuine picture from Mentawai for Iggy.
also, anyone who ever says 7 foot or 9 foot is a kook don't care how good they can surf calling 7 foot or 9 foot is mired in kookdom Gotta agree with Iggy here. If I'm talking to someone about surfing and they say 7ft or 9ft it automatically sets off alarm bells. Also I'm not the biggest fan of 2-4...

Is this what you're looking for..
Don't have time atm to explain it but it's a rough guide for estimating wave heights, period etc

Re: Sydney's Big Blow
What surprises me from the Sydney wave buoy is that for a Hmax of 11-12m, the Tpeak only came in at 11-12sec? I would have thought that a wave of 11-12m would have had a higher period than 11-12 seconds? Not when the swells generated so close to the Buoy picking up the observations. There's no real...

I'm thinking along the same lines as you Steve with the sub-tropical high pressure belt protruding further south, keeping the frontal activity further away for the continent and also holding back the fronts moving into the Tasman. Whether we can see any trend yet or this is just the them for the las...

More classic Occy just then.
The footage crossed to the jet-ski vision and Occy was like " that's a nice helicopter view.. oh wait, I can't hear a chopper, it must be the jet ski"

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Picked my mate up from the Airport just before 11 and then we headed straight to the beach. Was aiming to surf the Narra stretch but while he was buying a new wetty at Manly I watched the surf for a good 15mins and it was cranking! Lefts grinding at North Steyne with all the usual guys on it. Saw so...

Re: Where did you surf today ?
All depends on how the low forms but it's looking to become very large on the far South Coast.
The swell will be raw and ragged down there and with gale-force onshore winds and torrential rain I wouldn't wanna be around.
