kimmy and stuey

aw, c'mon kimmy. I think stuey might be taken cos if ever I saw a budding international romance unfolding it's between you two. I can just picture you both scootering off from the reception wearing your matching gaffs. Get him to take you down to Kyushu; there's some nice little point breaks on the ...

surfers ear

yeah buzzy, if you've held out a few years so far without getting the sufers ear (diffuse exostosis) op, my advice is to keep delaying it as long as you possibly can. I'm in fairly high health cover but it still set me back a couple of grand three years back. While the actual re-boring of the bone g...

hard hat

got my gaff before I had a surfers ear op and only used it a few times. paddling up the face of a wave with an offshore wind behind sounded like a space shuttle taking off. however, when I get the chainsaw out and get amongst the lantana, oleander, cotoneaster whatnot it's an absolute gem. a quarter...

a few years back I felt sorry for one of those old 12ft windsurfers that was left out on a nature strip for council cleanup collection. I pushed in onto the roof racks, thinking the thing at worst could be used for a backyard seat balanced on a couple of milk crates. Anyway, by now it's logged up ab...

Shit, boys and girls ... maybe we're all kooks now. Does anyone remember how to stand up?

Yeah, we all know the stats about getting taken by a shark but I dare say if you're a plumber in Des Moines as compared to a bodysurfer at Mavericks the odds might shift somewhat. I wish I knew how to put a website on this post but for anyone who can do a Google search, look up at site called Sharkc...

dolphins/sharks

Yeah Rocket, interesting you say there was a pod of dolphins about when you thought you spied the Man In The Grey Suit. Apparently, just before the two guys were killed in S Aust a couple of years back, there was a hell of a lot of dolphin activity close to shore. Don't know whether these mammals ar...

balance boards

While those commercial balance boards certainly do look spiffy, generally the same sort of equipment can be cobbled together with a bread board and an 10 inch section of 100mm precison log pine. Works fine ...

big one

I've been watching Newport Beach for for decades than I care to remember and the biggest single wave I've ever seen there was on Friday April 23 1999. It was a few hundred metres off the beachside units and I remember thinking to myself "what the f... is that'? I drove home and got my video camera b...

those bloody bali pix ...

while I'm absolutely sure that Sydney has the best beaches in the world, I'm beginning to think Bali might have the upper hand in terms of wave quality, consistency judging by the daily fare on Realurf. Here's hoping for a bit of swell for Luke Steadman's Avalon venture on Sunday ... otherwise it lo...

wave size

One thing I think tow-in has done has resulted in a more realistic assessment of wave size ... I don't know how macho it is to call double overhead five feet, guess it depends if you call it from the water or the beach. But with the big prizes on offer for the year's biggest wave (obviously towed-in...

breakwater

Haven't been up the north coast for yonks, but the couple of times I've visited trial Bay jail (South West Rocks) I got depressed looking at that breakwater off the point and thinking what a great right-hander might exist without it. Better still maybe, nuke the thing and there'd be plenty of rubble...
