Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
In retrospect, the shark did not bite Mick. I don't think that in any way reduces the potential danger of that encounter. I'm pretty sure the bite Mick option was definitely in play when that shark went in. In fact, the shark went in and bit the first bit of Mick it encountered. It just happened to ...

Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
Joe Turpel is getting much better as a caller. His content has always been good. His problem was he often seemed to struggle the find the end of his paragraphs and just kept droning on and on. A lot more relaxed now, stops at the right time, much more of a conversation with M. Potter.

Re: Ask Carroll
Yep, Parko is great to watch. Back to Fanno, you can't say he has a totally cynical comp created style. As he has said many times, his idol is Taylor Knox, who I think only ever won one ASP contest, in Brazil. Mick's style is really based on aesthetic choices. Sure, he has developed that style prefe...

Re: Ask Carroll
Do you ever watch Micks surfing and find it robotic and a bit boring? I'll jump in with my unsolicited opinion. You hear the robotic comment quite a bit. I think it is really a bit of a compliment. Firstly, it highlights his technical skill level. But also, it points to another strength. His surfin...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
lol ... the great surfing conundrum. our love of the environment and waves meets nuclear powered chlorinated waves. As a minor point, just so we are subject matter experts, I did think it was chlorine but actually the water, 'will be cleaned using UV disinfection and filtration, so the facility wil...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
Offshore refraction is where it's at with regard to creating surf. alakaboo, are you talking about wave focussing sand slugs? Those geobags would seem ideal for that. Making improved beach breaks along long exposed beaches, like on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, while increasing sea life and protect...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
It seems very unlikely that it will be a commercially successful project, but it is going to be interesting to watch. They say the setup costs for Snowdonia are 12 million pounds and the snow plough does seem a cheaper way to make waves. Naturally, bathymetry is also been a very key part of the desi...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
Mostly I have just read the opposing view on wave pools expressed in comment threads.steve shearer wrote:Could you point me to any essays which provide the opposing viewpoint on wave pools?
But this is a very good impassioned piece on The Inertia.

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
And I'm sure that without the countervailing arguments you would consider the inherent bias a pro fisherman might have about the subject. Absolutely, and there are plenty of countervailing arguments about the ethics of wave pools being posted. Good to hear his view though. Might not win the debate,...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
Not really. If I was a pro fisherman making money off it that would be valid. If there is a debate about pro fishing, pro fishers are certainly one of the voices I would like to hear on the subject. The waves he is producing are in the hands of private interests: he's charging a fee to tide them. A...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
But for starters having a wave pool designer commenting on the ethics of wave pool is a fundamentally flawed process because everything he says ipso facto falls into the " well he would say that wouldn't he". The human capacity for self justification trumps almost all other facilities. That's like ...

Re: Snowdonia Wavegarden
Steve, it sometimes sounds to me that you have an underpinning belief that there is something inately wrong with all commerce, which means it is a bit pointless to debate with you the merits or otherwise of any particular business and we can just leave it at that. But, he is clearly not putting 'sur...

Snowdonia Wavegarden
I'm beginning to get interested in this wave park due to open on 1 August. I hadn't read much about it before, so excuse me if I am repeating stuff everybody, except me, already knows. They've had the problem of generating a wave with affordable energy inputs. And then getting the quality of the wav...

KS seemed in his old full mind game mode, sucking Kolohe into some wrong choices, paddling around Kolohe in tight circles while Kolohe had priority etc.
