Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

Comparing Shark Shield versions Freedom7 and Surf7: . . . The mounting kit for the Surf7 is designed to be integrated into the tail pad, but it needs some sort of cover to use when surfing without the Shark Shield. http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk217/Mr_Mik/Shark%20Zapper%20vs%20GWS/DSC_0145-1...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

No MrMik, Qld does not seem to provide good public stats on that, that is partly why the estimates hearing was interesting. NSW has much better published stats. Peruse their report. It is seems very good. Let's assume it is accurate. I think go to table 7, Page 20, which is Page 26 of the PDF. Thou...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

It was interesting to read the Qld shark catch figures. From the ABC Shark nets or drum lines will remain off 82 beaches from Cairns in far north Queensland to the Gold Coast. In the 2014-15 financial year, 621 sharks had been caught, including eight great white sharks, 251 tiger sharks, 111 bull s...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

Mrmik, I thought that the thinner red and black cable in the second last photo was to be used to attach to the leg rope plug as a back up in case the tail pad comes unstuck. I hear ya about getting zapped, I used mine at Cabarita a few days ago and when I turtled under a wave the antennae was next ...

Re: Ask Carroll

The egg. It was laid by something very much like a chicken but not quite. In that egg was a perversion of Nature, a mutant, strangely unlike its parents. They raised it as their own...but secretly harboured a horror of what they had unleashed on the world. Correct! You are the first person to give ...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

Comparing Shark Shield versions Freedom7 and Surf7: . The Surf7 has a longer and thinner antenna and is mounted to a mounting kit which is glued to the surf board. The Freedom7 attaches to the ankle similar to a leg rope. The electrodes are the silvery areas in the antennas. On the Surf7, the elect...

Re: Ask Carroll

my need for commitment to the cause has evaporated. mine fluctuates too. it's been good reading about your thoughts, boo. in general the 3 year hiatus i took from the ocean after i tore my achilles were probably some of the happiest years i've had. there was a kind of alleviating freedom of not bei...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

ha ha. looks like lil brother has stumbled into a relationship with shark shield at just the right moment. my god but this is a mongo period in surfing. hard core long term surfers who grew up in and believed in every aspect of the core baby boomer surf culture, from Nature=God on down, now want to...

Where did you not surf because of sharks? (including the ones in your head)

How often did you NOT surf, although you would have been within reasonably close distance to the waves, whilst the waves were of better than insufferable quality, because of possible shark attacks? And, as a secondary, what were the best wave conditions you ever failed to surf because of sharks (inc...

Re: Where didnt you surf today?

Duranbah. Must be the only place I have not surfed on the Gold Coast. But that's probably not what this thread is about.

Oh fuschia. I nominate Beanpole as TOTY for starting the subject, and everyone who replies as a close contender.

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

yeah but it might change your behaviour. With all due respect, I don't yet see which behaviour of mine needs changing. Do you think I should join the "The risk is negligible, stop worrying, you wuss!" brigade? Or maybe I should join the quickly growing crowd who are proposing the indiscriminate kil...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

it's not as crazy as it sounds. in the NT they are training quolls not to eat cane toads. they catch the quoll and feed them for a few months ... then they start to feed them cane toad-poisoned sausage which looks like a cane toad. it gives them a non-lethal dose of the poison, but it makes them si...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

As for teaching sharks to stay away from human swimmers or surfers, it may well be enough if a significant proportion of divers, surfers and swimmers wear electronic shark repellents. While shark and other sea-life numbers rise back to more normal levels in some parts of the oceans, the complete dep...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

Well how about going the other way. Like teach yourself about sharks through direct contact. I don't mean one of those cage shark dive things with big white sharks, but a series of open water non cage dives with the vastly more common species, whalers, Galapagos, nurse, sand sharks etc It'd really ...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

I think we need to teach them, not kill them. They will most likely learn to avoid biting humans if it almost kills them, or at least feels like it almost kills them. Maybe we can invent some self defence method that actually almost kills them, maybe sometimes does kill them, and ideally always kill...
