^^maybe in the longer run this is how the surf schools will be viewed. Specially if they are seen to instruct for crowd etiquette over time.
Ski schools have been around a lot longer, I imagine the core ski crew are pretty used to 'em by now.

Yeah...but I dunno if that's a surf school related issue wanto. Surfing's full of people who think they're better than they are. why in a recent thread I was taken to task for saying (a bit rudely admittedly) that little brother Tom had the right to surf whatever he liked out the Peak without ...

Don't they already pay a substantial sum to the local councils? I think in the worst cases it's a bit like the fitness trainers who take their client groups running around public lands at 6 am, yelling and grunting and carrying on, and pissiing off anyone else in the immediate vicinity. They do it b...

^^I was gonna say "flogger" I have to say I find myself taking less and less boards on trips these days -- just the ones I really feel like riding and that I know will suit the waves. Perversely this has increased my enjoyment of trips, partly 'cause I'm not lugging around a pile of fibreglass...

BA, I know what you mean there, it's really nice you taught your girl to surf, it's a great thing to share between you, but not everyone who'd like to surf can be born or brought into a family of 30-year surfing veterans. I dunno if anyone really learns to surf by 'emselves. You only go surfing in t...

Newport is not the centre of the surfing universe NickNack  8) [/quote] True, thank f**k, but it is a bit of a Microcosm. Newport now has a surf school on regular midweek occasions, run by the old school Narrabeen local Dave Lawler, Dave is smart enough not to take his charges out the Peak. P...

Yeah Cliff, in skiing they've done those studies and there's a 10% retention rate.. I did a bit of a study of Sydney surf schools a couple of years ago and retention seemed to be around 5%. Beat you two (clif and buzzy) to the punch  what other lame-arse demographic can we research for the ban...

Well 2nd reef is really hitting on our investment in meaning. Those brief seconds of riding time mean more to us as a result of their brevity. It's like gold, right? Because it's difficult to find, it means more. This is a gorgeous thing to me, and I would not swap the few hours I've spent actually ...

I've worked all the way around the Vector sets and think the latest R2 435s are so ridiculously good they leave other beachbreak fins grasping at thin air. Vectors have a size limit -- beyond 6 feet of wave size they begin to counteract their initial grandiose drive effect and start to drag and scre...

grazza, Stephanie is the next Lisa Andersen. Lisa similarly was way ahead of the curve in a pure surfing sense. Much as I love Ms Beachley, she's never produced a turn as good as Lisa's top turn cutback combo. Steph is a full on athlete who's fallen into surfing to our great good fortune. She will l...

Wasn't the last group of young people to die struck by another vehicle? Did this not have bugger all to do with them? I have a daughter who's inches away from driving age and I'm acutely aware that the only thing standing between her and an accident of some kind while she's at the wheel is her own c...
