Re: Ask Carroll

i think you kinda have to be in a fairly desperate place born from trauma or abuse or mental illness to take on something like ice or heroin in the first place. don't you? or am i completely naive because i was only ever a bit of a casual stoner for the last couple of my teen years? Nah, I reckon a...

Re: Ask Carroll

Rockstar poets, well it is interesting you use that term given the past 50-60 years of popular music, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, etc all the way through to say Kendrick Lamar, PJ Harvey and so forth. That all seems to be alive and kicking. Anyway plenty of good and great poets working today and they'l...

Re: Ask Carroll

Nick, do you think Poetry as a dedicated art form is becoming obsolete? I know musicians, writers, painters, all at different levels of dedication and career.. but no 'full time poets'. Will there ever again be rockstar poets (Byron, Shelley, late '60's counter culture cats etc), or has the new Gen ...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

I suspect it is a coincidence Duck. Medium sized Autumn swells and offshore winds coming on the back of the ECL giving the impression of causality Yep. Sounds likely, especially when the swell is not too straight or too powerful for the beaches. Some swell signatures seem to work everywhere. Well i...

Wow, just wow.
See, if you'd written "Wow. Just, wow." I'd be feeling worried that I'd offended you in some way. As it is, with the comma after the first wow, I'm merely curious as to why you felt my comment warranted a WJW.

Re: correct paddling technique?

Rowing helps in that it strengthens the shoulder and back muscles and corrects the resting position of the shoulder that you probably have from sitting at a computer. Also dramatically improved my muscular endurance. But it is not as good as paddling or swimming. Had my first pool swimming session ...

Re: correct paddling technique?

I have had shoulder issues in the past, however over the past 2 years my shoulder problems have greatly improved and are now pretty minor. What worked for me is paddling. Distance paddling a clubby board has helped fix my shoulders. I'm not saying this will work for all. It just worked for me. My t...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Spent the weekend down the coast. Had 4 surfs over 2 days. Every surf was pretty fcuken ok or better. Pretty sore now. Met olds in the water on sat arvo at the island, which was good. Waves were 3-4ft and reasonable with no crowd. I heard it was great darn sarf! Mates were at one of those cheeky li...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

I watched Sandon Point yesterday arvo grow from 1 to 4 foot in the space of about half an hour. 4 dudes out. Pumping. I didn't have a board with me, but that was cool, as I was returning from work and more excited about today's prospects. Had a beer, went to sleep listening to some booming sets..Wok...

Re: Does surfing under the influence enhance the experience.

I like the idea of blazing a spliff as I cruise the coast, listening to Jimi, finding that sweet set up.. paddling out to smoothly rip the wave apart over and over again.. then quietly return to my car buzzing with the vibe. The reality is whenever I smoke weed and surf, I suck. But the first bit, b...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Scarborough yesterday was as fun as it gets out there. 2-3 ft peaks all the way along the beach...busy, but so much choice it didn't really feel like it.

Been out of the water for months with injury, so it was a very satisfying surf. Surf satisfaction meter: 8/10.

Re: Ask Carroll

Thanks Nick, and Legion. Yep I had a feeling that things may end up on the operating table..It just doesn't feel like an injury that is going away anytime soon.

I want to surf for the next 20 years, so a few months out isn't the end of the world!
