HAVE LITTLE REPECT FOR PEOPLE WHO RIDE MALS WITHOUT RIDING THE NOSE, THERE'S NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THAT... NOT PERSONAL, THATS A BLANKET STATEMENT FROM ME TO EVERYONE! Seems pretty personal to me, mate. I reckon you've missed the point of riding a Mal. It's about the versatility to work the wave. No...

56.
Started on hired surf-o-planes at Kirra at about 9 or 10.
Mals from 15.
Still love the stoke of paddling out at first light, gentle ofshores, no crew and 3 to 6 foot swell. Here's hoping tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

You're kidding aren't you Wanderer. I've never ridden a short board. Started surfing in 1962. Can't get more traditional than that. I can and do nose ride (getting the trim right to be able to cross step is an art form, I agree) but really can't be bothered. Like Baldric I prefer to use the length a...

Matt's Hoax Call On Sunny Coast

Hey Matt,
Wish you were right. I hate it when I see those waves in Qld, too. Especially as I'm stuck in Sydney.
HOWEVER. The Coastalwatch cams are showing waves on both the Goldie and Sunshine Coast

I have a Ray Woosley 8'6" made in about 1967-8. Just as they started to cut them down. Thsi was basically a Competitor 399 shape but chopped off at the back to about a 12" tail block, V bottom and shark fin. The old glass with the greenish tinge. Rides well but loses out in the performance stakes to...

Ah yes, The days before post codes and decimal currency. When you could hire surf-o-planes for one shilling an hour - any colour you like as long as it's black. before the groins, when the Snapper Rocks Porpoise pool was stil there. When you could leave your catamaran on the beach at Kirra all week ...

Strewth, Aren't there any real oldies reading this forum? All shorties. Mine was a 9'3" Joe Larkin. Picked it up at 7.30 am Dec 24th 1963 and surfed all day at Kirra, Greenmount and Rainbow Bay. Wore all the skin off my knees and spent two weeks recuperating. I was 15. It cost 49 pounds (and weighed...

Seems to me the type of surf determines who gets the best of it. Sure mals can pick up a wave early, but boogers can pick it up a lot later - and plenty of the ones I surf with can get up a pretty good pace paddling, especially with the help of their fins. Mals and lids seem to share pretty well out...

Hey KKK, I like Chisel, too. I agree they were right up there with the best in their prime and I'm still happy to listen to them. Like "East". Their "Ita" showed how they were into topical things as did Khe Sahn. When it comes right down to it, "Working Class Man typifies what they are all about. Gi...

Hey,I don't blame Tom Williams for hanging out the edge at Teahupoo but I did see him at Margaret River and he certainly knows how to surf - and he can snowboard, too. Good on him, I say.

Hey, I have to stick in my 2 bob's worth for Dripping Wet at Manly. My daughter and 3 of her girlfriends have all shopped there, got good friendly, helpful advice and didn't feel pressured. They'll shop there again. My only personal experience is having a chat to them as they opened up while I got m...

As I said at the start of this thread, you should do what feels comfortable. Surfing started out as free expression and comps came later. Although I've dabbled in them I don't make a habit of it. Much prefer to do my own thing which tends to be driven by a desire to stay in the power section of the ...

Are you Kimmy's Wicked Weasel Bikinis, or are you Kimmy's Gift Voucher - or maybe, kimmy's Cafe in Rydalmere?

Westy Surfers

Hey,guys. How many readers of these worthy pages are like me - stuck in the western suburbs (or the Hills District) all week and get a bit of a fix from reading the Real Surf Forums. Interesting comments about "locals" if you drive 20 or so k's to get a surf. I've been going to the same area for so ...
