The brainlessness of people lilke DDI never ceases to amaze me. Here's someone that enjoys reading the site, yet gets shirty if someone starts reporting on a beach (actually, two) near him. So which is it, DDI - are you a newport local or a bungan local? Ya can't be both... can you? or are you like ...

yeah, days like these there's always one or two fun ones around. I had a great session (in the water) this arvo, not too many people, a couple of interesting sections. onshore days are often fun. as to taking it on the head... I reckon it's the duty of the person paddling out to stay out of the way ...

Has anyone tried the new FCS fins with the inside foil on the outside fins? They're advertised in the mags with an infinity symbol on 'em. FCS has also released these funny, stubby looking fins - saw an ad in that new Stab mag. I'm super curious to know how they go. I know that FCS got some sort of ...

fitness
I used to do lots of gym work - free weights, stairmaster, treadmill. Then something started to bother me: I saw lots of older guys who'd spent their youth running suddenly needing knee/hip replacements when they hit their fifties. Now it could be that back in the day all they had were dunlop volley...

I just use the coopers tins, but often use brown sugar instead of regular sugar. Nice.

MP
There's a book on MP coming out soon. WRitten by some guy from tracks (bit of a worry!) but apparently it's been done with MP's co-operation. I've got an old copy of SURFER mag stashed around the place somewhere. It has a story on McGivilray/ Freeman's never released movie "Waves of CHange". Keith P...

cheap imports 2
Go somewhere like Surf Dive n Ski in George st in town. Have a look at a couple of the mals in there. Also visit a couple of independent surf shops and look for brands like "Blue" or "Rype". They're all mass produced boards. Not really much different from the 60's, really, when mass production (albe...

cheap imports
They're a reality. Tim Baker wrote a piece about a company (called tiger?) up in thailand. Published in ASL. This company produce standard polyurethane foam/glass boards. The reason they don't have concaves etc is because the machines used to do the basic shaping can't do them. You need a shaper to ...

Clothes
I'm not a big fan of the surfie clothes brands. Expensive. Badly styled. Too many logos. When I was younger I used to buy clothes at the op shops and disposal stores, but I am a bit too old for that now. So where do you get funky, non logo'd, well made clothes? I don't mind paying for quality (got a...

wetties and warranties
Re the ASL buyer's guide. It's worth checking out the specs closely - I noticed that a couple of the 'suits (including, I think, the QS, but I don't have the mag to hand) don't have warranties! The best warranty was the rip curl. I used to call hoax on some of these expensive brand name wetsuits. Th...

board strength
a couple of points: board strength has more to do with the foam density than the glass weight. Modern boards (all boards) are foam/glass sandwich construction. The stronger the foam, the stronger the board, basically. Light blanks have more air in them (it's a foam, see), and so they're weaker. Cust...

fins
Stiffer fins will increase drive and lengthen your turn. It sounds like your fins stalled. I reckon: a) you might be turning from too far up the board b) you may not be turning hard enough off the back foot c) your fins might simply need changing. Perhaps something with a little more rake? essential...

manufacturing
Anyway this is all just speculation and may never really happen in the surfing industry actually, it already has. Sort of. What most surfers don't realise is that even "custom" boards are profiled (machine shaped) using a core set of templates provided by a shaper. WHat they do is shape a range of ...
