yeah stu, after decyphering the pidgin I realised you're making a valid point: wave pools = more people surfing = more people showing up at my local (beach - and probably pub).

And so, after all that, what's your point? Things change. How are you going to adapt?

There are plenty of literate surfers out there, and plenty that want something to read. I've been toying with the idea of a surf blog, or perhaps something surf focused, but like this:

www.boingboing.net

anyone know any good surf blogs out there?

What I want to know: will it be possible to have locals at a man made wave pool? In two generation's time will some kid be hanging there, saying how his family's been in the area since before the pool was built? Telling other kids to fuck off outa the line up? i Overall I reckon this is a positive t...

No, it's not attitude at all. It's arrogance. The arrogance of people like Buzzy and BB - and a lot of the kooks that posted to the no new beginners forum - that says that the only valid way of surfing is the way that they surf. The other real problem they have is that they're basing their experienc...

The only thing that's funnier than a Manly "local" complaining about longboarders and kooks and backpakcers and blow-ins is a Bondi "local" doing the same. Cracks me up. So here we've got poor old Buzzy paddling out at Bondi. Heaven forbid, but there are longboarders out there! And backpackers! And ...

Buzzy, you're spot on. Yesterday I surfed fun 1' - 2' waves on a 7' egg type board. You could have ridden a short board, but it would not have been any fun. Back in 1993 Dave Parmenter wrote an excellent article for Surfer Magazine about "hybrid" style surfboards. These aren't <quite> the same thing...

I read an interview, I think it was in surfer's journal, written by Andrew Kidman about Tudor and Wayne Lynch. At one point Tudor is hassling Lynch to shape him an evolution style egg, and Lynch disses him, saying that they were basically dogs that didn't go where you wanted them to. Boards have com...

Ok, cool. I made a wrong assumption. The question wasn't meant to be obnoxious, so thanks for replying in the spirit! I guess what I am curious about is why someone walks into a surfshop and thinks "Ok, I'm gonna buy that <insert major brand name>" instead of getting a board from their local shaper,...

I think that the problem with many hybrids on the market is that they're made for "average" surfers, but the worst thing that an "average" surfer can have is something that's unsophisticated. There's a world of difference between technical accuracy and sophistication, and something being hard to rid...

I've ridden a couple of these "eggs" or hybrids. If you're going to order one, pay close attention to the detail. I don't want to mention brand names, but there's one that's popular on the northern beaches. Lovely plan shape, but the tail and bottom are very unsophisticated. For a hybrid to work wel...

Ok, this guy did ask at least one sensible question - who are reputable local shapers? Ok, aside from the realsurf store you could try: Simon Anderson Warner surfboards Luke Short Designs (LSD) Chilli Brandon McDonald They're all either in the phone book or you can try google them. All those guys wi...

The other weird thing - this guys is complaining about the exchange rate between $A and $US. Although the USD has fallen relative to the A$, it's still worth more. Back to boards. Buying shaper direct is often, but not always, cheaper than through a shop. The advantage of buying shaper direct is tha...

I reckon manly. it's unreal, hey! You can park your Porsche Cayenne right on the beach and check out the swell without getting out of your car! And if you don't feel like going surfing there's heaps of cafes. Manly's great cause you can spend as much time carving up the carpark as the lineup. When y...

I spent some time travelling in Europe. Mainly for surf, also for other things and so one board was a sensible option. A good 6'8" (I'm 6'0", 90 kilos, fit) rounded pin, decent glass job did me fine. Lots of speed on the smaller days, enough rail line on the slightly bigger days. And when it was ser...

I just picked up a new custom shaper yesterday - 6'4" x 19.5" x 2.5". Glassed in "soar" hexalite fins. I think there's one thing that's been kind of missing from this discussion: fitness. If you're surf fit, are a strong, powerful paddler and work at your surfing (and yes, this is possible, even if ...

Stu, I thought you'd retired from these forums. Couldn't help yourself, huh? anyway, I'm interested in who gets the $11. Bells is one of the few (perhaps the only?) surfing reserves in australia. if it goes to the upkeep of the joint, then that's fine. If it goes to Rip Curl, well... that's a bit li...
