Re: Shapers.

on the main topic... i don't like surfboard shapers. i reckon you need to have some surfing 'kudos' before you get a decent board from a shaper, let alone the sort of connection Steve and Nick are talking about. i haven't got that, so i think that most shapers are unreliable, cranky, always late, do...

Re: Shapers.

Walks in to pick it up, its a narrow round nose, wide round tail hahaha. Turns out to be a sick board, and i love the thing, trims from the front very well, and turns off the back foot great. Perfect for small, fat, gutless days, of which we have a few. that sounds a bit like a 'pig'? not dissing the...

Re: tide times...yes i'm havin a bitch...again

okay fong, i'll have a crack, so your head doesn't explode. :D don't have the answer, but i have some ideas. first, there is a tidal lag at tewantin, as i posted before. there is something called the 'rule of twelfths' which explains the tidal force at different times in the cycle. you can find it o...

Re: Side Bites

from what i've read, the size of the board is less important than the relationship between the size of the centre and the sides, and the overall fin area in relation to the tail. the standard theory seems to be that the sidebites should be about half the height of the centrefin, similar in planshape...

Re: Internet, phones and crowds

I can imagine my theory is NOT applicable to the superbank where numbers seem to be astronomical beyond belief. strangely, i find crowded superbank one of the easiest places to get waves. much easier than a peaky break in sydney where 5 decent surfers can pretty much monopolise the sets! sure, i'm ...

Re: South of Sydney 15 May

must have improved as the tide came in, at first light that spot was a bit sketchy with about 5-10 on it already. the spot where i took the pics definitely looked nicer (at the times we checked), but would have required serious figs, or horsepower The larger ones out the back of the CW spot were huge!

Re: Internet, phones and crowds

Been doing a lot of actual research into this subject over the past coupla months for a series on another website (yes ASL) and discovered something amazing but true: the actual number of surfers in Australia over the past decade has not increased nearly as much as we might all think. Probably gone...

yeah, i said above i didn't think it was true...i've seen some of those pics too. think the old fella who told us that was just trying to give the groms a chance to back out without losing face. kind old bugger. if you feel like it, send me a pm with those other spots and we can compare notes.... i'...

fong, did you have adequate ventilation when you were fixing your dings? :? 2 secs on google got me to here: http://tides.willyweather.com.au/qld/sunshine-coast/noosa-river--tewantin.html which says: "...tide times have been adjusted 109 minutes for low tide, and 67 minutes for high tide to the offi...

alakaboo, fantasy land it was maybe years ago but you agreed with the too detailed report and why would you invite more people to the breaks yep. i think most people on here would agree with most of what you've said. I hoped by bringing it to some peoples attention that just maybe the reports might...

Re: Internet, phones and crowds

hey headlander. i'm too young to remember the good old days, so can i come and live in your fantasy land? is it true the swell is always from the right angle, it's offshore till 2pm, and there are only ever the same number of people as there are waves in a set? that said, do have to agree with...

and #7, and #8. typically i stay the hell away from ledges like that, but once i had the odd experience of being slapped by a 2 footer over an almost exposed ledge and sliding about 15m due to the slime buildup. :o the fins needed some smoothing out, but otherwise the board was unharmed too. hope th...

South of Sydney 15 May

checked quite a few spots early on Saturday. a lot weren't really working because of the angle, some were maxed out. gflmp.jpg this spot had the best shape, but no takers. looked fantastic at first light, but would probably have required a serious board or tow-assist. i would have called it 8ft+ on ...

Re: Surf casualities - creepy surf breaks

does it? Where's Dad then? Up the pub? if he's sensible, females are much bigger than males when mature... the standard theory is that the males bite the females in front of the dorsals during mating. if i'd just bitten a 3.5m female on the neck, i'd get out of there fast too! :D Wouldn't do it now...

Re: Surf casualities - creepy surf breaks

Closer to home, Hawks Nest. I have now seen three white pointers in the surf in the last 2 years up there. Only small ones (2 meters). They probably wouldnt swallow you whole but they could rip our arm off. Funnily enough they swam right past without showing any interest. I suspect that Hawks Nest/...

Re: Surf casualities - creepy surf breaks

oh, if you're worried about sharks, never take a low altitude flight over the place you surf...
especially not if you surf anywhere between broken head and DI....

sure it's the same elsewhere, but that's where i've done shark surveys...
