Re: Momentum Generation

There were 2 of them today and they were trying to run a comp! It was half a foot of onshore northerly slop and the surfing was mostly pretty dire. The commentary, for the 4 dads sinking cans under the marquee, was completely detached from reality. Joe Turpel would've blushed. Barely perceptible wei...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

No paperwork because no money, Steve.
Council knows about it, some people are helping shop it around. Maybe not the planning section.

Nick was writing about it in July for CW when I asked last time. Not sure if he ended up publishing something?
And that wasn't the first time I heard about it.

Re: Midlengths

I have a similar style of board, and my advice is to Gona little shorter than recommended. You will probably be tempted to go longer and have it as a pseudo-mal, but they have too much rocker to compete and are way more manoeuvrable than you'd think. The width makes for a very forgiving platform for...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Two days ago someone at Sunshine Coast council lied to you.
That's a rehashed story from March.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Well crabby I quit my day job to take up a coastal job that means I'm at the coast 2 days a week, and I find myself unreasonably excited about surfing poorly in crowded springtime Gold Coast slop. In general though, I have to say I'm liking the mountain biking scene a lot more than surfing. You know...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I'd like to see that, but also let a bunch of pro snowboarders and skaters train for a few weeks and throw them in to keep the pros honest, like they did with the flowrider events back in the day.
I think a couple of little Japanese or Norwegian halfpipe specialists would go alright.

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I only saw 3 waves, they seemed better, like the water level was lower. Could've been better camera angles, the ski angle is not flattering at all. The lip line is more oblique, giving a steeper transition in the turn sections, but the trade-off is a greater need to maintain speed down the line, ie ...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

I just watched one wave of Kolohe's waves. God it was safe. And I can't understand why if they know EXACTLY what the wave is going to be they are still running boards that require the double wiggle bottom turn to get the water through the find? The girl's boards seem to suit the pool better, and Gab...

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?

The rise in grey nurse captures could be because of the change in gear and bait. My understanding is they use mullet and circle hooks for the smart buoys, whereas some other operators use regular shark hooks and sometimes bait with shark. But I agree there's probably been an increase in the grey nur...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

As I understand it, in the Hawaiian scale the conversion factor slides with size. So, a 6 foot wave may be 10 to 12 feet imperial, but a 20 - 25 feet wave is probably around 25 - 35 imperial. Of course I don't really care foamy, I never ever just say feet, I always suffix it "faces" or use knee, wa...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

It's not a particularly difficult thing to build an artificial reef. Paying for it and getting it approved without modification is another matter. This one was 18+ million, and that's leaving a lot off the balance sheet. It was nearly abandoned in favour of groynes a few times. If the council rates ...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Steve could do eleven tricks I reckon 1) pop up 2) trim 3) floater 4) cutback (standard not full cranked roundhouse) 5) slash 6) snap 7) barrel 8.) 360 (once in 1989) 9) bottom turn 10) check turns 11) re-entry Don't forget this winning move. Guaranteed 10. https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb195...
