Mandy Zieren and Kira Llewellyn.
Don't look at 'em, you'll get confused and miss the next set wave.

I suspect many hardcore surfers are somewhat engaged in an affair of sorts with the ocean, and may even feel comfortable leading a double life -- spouse over here, surf over there -- for similar emotional reasons as people have conventional affairs. I wonder if this added to the cruelty of your ex-b...

There's usually more than one wave in a set. Surfer A should probably know that by now. And if Alpha Male Hell Boy B paddles too deep for himself under pressure, guess what, he's not Alpha any more, he's Beaten. Sometimes upon entering the surf, cruelly, instead of simply paddling around B an...

Show me a wave pool capable of creating what I surfed at north Newport all day today, and I'll show you something worth paying for. Until then, I'm afraid I remain extremely sceptical about wave pools, artificial reefs, and almost every company and person who touts 'em. There have been numerous atte...

what are the orange buoys for at chopes? to mark the edge of the reef/drop off? The orange buoys are used by the dumb arse spectator boats as moorings and by the dumb arse photo boats to mark the Edge of Reason. On big days, on wide big sets, tied off craft can be pulled underwater on the sh...

Thanks Matt -- I really enjoy interacting with my fellow surfers -- probably why I started writing for the mags in the first place! ABOUT TILTING YOUR BOARD FOR DUCKDIVE: Ive never understood this one. the board NEVERRRRRRRRR goes down when i tilt it. IT makes it 100x harder. What are you talking ab...

How about someone putting up an actual argument? Because nobody gives a flying f**k, sunshine. This was undoubtedly the most boring thread in history until Wanto livened it up with his crazy new equine companion. I reckon the challenge is on. What's next, midget triplets? Meanwhile, all you slavish...

NC a 3 wave hold down in a hawaiian swell (24 seconds?) is in my mind quite an achievement: at least a minute underwater while burning all your energy fighting! they should put that challenge in survivor. The swell woulda been 17 seconds, so yeah, about two and half of those intervals. Much too lon...

OK, bugger it. At the age of 23 I went surfing at Sunset bloody Beach one early morning in a 10-15-foot NW fresh swell, thinking I was king s**t as always. Only about 10 guys out, high tide. Got a couple of beauties. God I am soooo good, I thought, I'll paddle really deep and close in. Then you bet,...

Velzy was a great bloke. Unlike so many Septic SoCal old schoolers, he was totally not up himself. Dale loved a ciggie (not recommending 'em, you understand) and rather than mount himself up somewhere as a Living Legend to be trundled out at tradeshows and the like, worked his latter years out in Sa...

Hi Squid! Everyone's got good points here. Catching waves is more about positioning than paddling speed -- but greater paddling acceleration gives you more options in the takeoff zone. It's really more about that -- acceleration, not pace -- which is why some people use the ol' sink-the-tail-and-pop...
