Re: Fiji - Coral Coast - Off season
Coral Coast does sound a bit less crowded. Realise you can get uncrowded days at Cloudbreak, but if both adjacent islands are booked out thats a lot of surfers. Where would you stay on the Coral Coast? Mantanivusi Eco Resort looks goods. Tired of the cat and mouse games of Ments board trips and look...

Been told Namoutu booked out rest of year, Tavarua has only 2 weeks left in Nov/Dec.

Re: Ask Carroll
Thanks Nick, no sanding for me As I said I really like the way the BB surfs off the rail, can imagine on a good size, down the line wave it would want to just carve out nice long turns at speed, which is what I bought it for. Instead of taking a 6'8" semi gun, which last few trips never got used, I ...

Re: Ask Carroll
Hi Nick Just picked up a Al Merrick Black Beauty 6'3" for a trip to Indo. Like your design advice on the hard edge rail that goes the length of the board. Understand the edge gives it bite, but why have it running along the top half of the board? When I was looking at buying it 2 surf retailers ment...

Re: Ask Carroll
Hey Nick With the trend for shorter, more volume, everyday boards, where does that leave the step up for the average surfer. Should it also come down in length? While shorter but with more volume may paddle in ok on bigger days (6' plus), and turn tight into the pocket, what happens next, are you be...

What do you ride when its 6' on the point? I'd like to get a discussion up on what people ride and why, pros an cons, length/thickness

Re: Ask Carroll
Length v thickness? Hey Nick, appreciate your thought on the issue of length v thickness in a step up board for the average surfer. In recent years the pros have been riding smaller step ups, more volume/wider noses, and board companies & surf shops have been promoting same to the average Joe. But i...

Re: Shorter or Longer?
Got a 6' Lost "Rock Up" as a step up board (replacing a 6'3" JS Occy), and it goes great in bigger waves. Paddles in like a bigger board due to wider front half, draws out turns as back is pulled in rounded pin, but is shorter so easier to turn, its 2 boards in one, same design principle as Josh Ker...

Re: Shorter or Longer?
Agree Nick. But I wasn't actually talking about BIG waves, just good quality waves in a decent average-man's range. Our generation grew up surfing single fins when the average length was around 6'6". We are now surfing great performance boards under 6' as go to boards, some 40 years later. Thankful ...

Re: Shorter or Longer?
Second thought: Shorter, fatter gives you more volume so helps with paddling, so heavier guys can surf smaller boards, but it gives you a shorter waterline, which surely works against paddling. And once up on a wave a shorter rail line means tighter turns, but drawing out turns around sections can b...

Shorter or Longer?
Been riding shorter, more volumed boards lately as per the trend in board making. Which is cool in smaller, less than average waves. But wondering on merits of shorter versus longer when it comes to good waves, say anything 4' and over with a bit of power. Reason thought about this, got caught on 5'...

Re: Getting caught inside at HTs and Rifles
Just back from Ments. Swept over HTs 3 times on last surf, no injuries, only coral tatts when didn't make one barrel and got swatted out the back. Nick Carroll right get best waves and don't fight it if you get caught inside. Just head to shore, if low tide flip board fins up and drift in, then just...

Re: Single fin shortboards
Single fin tail shape? Wider, more classic shape 60s, or narrower ala 70s style. Performance differences?

Single fin shortboards
Interested in hearing from anyone riding singlefin shortboard. What shape & size, and what sort of surf you using it in. Pros & Cons Grew up riding single fins before thrusters were invented, haven't ridden one for decades. Thinking about buying a Hot Buttered double flyer swallow, owned one in the ...

Re: Loosing up boards
Pinhead, I thought that too, wondered whether should have gone 18 3/4, but opted for 19 wide to get paddling power for bigger waves. Got to admit, few 6' lefts on my backhand on recent Ments trip, the board flew, so hoping stomping backfoot over tail should do the job. Like i mentioned earlier about...

Re: Loosing up boards
Yep Occy is round tail and does have a nice smooth turn. Will be sticking with K2.1s as the combo goes great on my smaller Occy.

Re: Loosing up boards
Agree with both Natho and Donweather and have started concenrating on turning with open shoulders, also ensuring back foot planted squarely over tail pad. Was interested in fin options others may use to loosen up a step up and guns, some opt for much bigger side fins (one usually see in fishes) and ...

Re: Loosing up boards
Was thinking of using TC RedLines on the side and a back TC whiteline, big bases give drive and small tips quick release. Using all Whitelines in all three positions feel would make board slip on bottom on bigger waves. JUst not sure about the Redline, they are a big mans fin.
