Re: Andy Irons Dies

Ted Endo just published a detailed and thoughtful piece on the AI saga: "In life, Irons’ rock star combination of savant surfing and personal brashness polarized the surfing community like few other public figures, so it is grimly fitting that his death should do the same. Re: Prejudice in Surfing

Its a very good article. Now that leaves sexism and the other big one that needs dealing with - homophobia. I'm glad that some people have found it interesting. As to your suggestions, here are a couple of pieces you might appreciate: http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/no-girls-allowed/ http:...

Prejudice in Surfing

I worked on this piece for quite a while that addresses issues of diversity/bigotry in surf culture. After conducting a lot of interviews and thinking hard about the most constructive way to put it together, I came up with this. I really hope you find it worthwhile and I would love to hear your thou...

A Moving Letter from Gerry Lopez

Gerry Lopez is one of the most talented surfers of all time, but he shared an amazing letter to surfers of Israel and Gaza on The Inertia that demonstrates what an amazing ambassador for surfing and a great person he is too. Here's a link to his piece: http://www.theinertia.com/surf/gerry-lopez-lett...

Re: Pro Surfing or UFC?

Ted Endo just wrote a great piece examining violence in surf culture without pulling punches, so to speak. "The truth is, violence fascinates us. Always has. Surfers may obsessively debate whether violence is right or wrong, but it remains an immutable constant in any sport without an arbiter." http...

Re: Pro Surfing or UFC?

So what's the appropriate punishment for this? Sports' fighting policies are strange. In hockey, it's encouraged (for at least a little while). In surfing, it's mostly ignored. In soccer, it's all acting. http://www.theinertia.com/surf/jeremy-flores-sunny-garcia-violence-disqualified-burleigh-breaka...

Rethinking Tavarua

I thought you guys might find this article about Tavarua interesting - especially since you're a lot closer (at least location-wise) than Americans http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/what-tavaruas-liberation-means-for-fiji-surfing-areas-decree/ William Finnegan also has an article on Tavarua c...

A Moving Speech from Shaun Tomson

I thought you all might appreciate this speech Shaun delivered a few weeks ago. In Shaun's words: "I told the story of how surfing and tube-riding essentially saved my life. I strongly believe that surfing can teach us powerful lessons if we look beyond the next wave." In case you'd like to read the...

Re: Does surf Journalism need to change?

Hey guys, we've been having a similar debate on The Inertia that I thought you might find interesting. Here are a couple of perspectives: 1) Yes: http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/surf-media-living-the-dream/ 2) Maybe: http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/surf-journalism-do-no-harm/ We ha...

Re: A rather enlightening article re AI..

Some more insight into the story: http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/obituary-pierces-silence-on-andy-irons-life/ When Californian journalist Brad Melekian was commissioned to write an obituary of three-time world champion Andy Irons, he was surprised by the number of people who were keen to d...

Surf Biz Grows Up

On July 23, 2009, a flurry of press releases pulsed through surf industry inboxes announcing that then-sixteen-year-old Hawaiian phenom, Carissa Moore, had officially joined forces with Target, a company that earned $65.4 billion in revenue in 2009 (that’s nearly ten times the entire surf and skate ...

Re: Dane Quitting Tour/Sensationalism?

I can imagine journalists like that will burn their bridges pretty quick. The good ones get the trust of the interviewee and look after them, making them comfortable to go back for more later right? No matter how much a subject decides to trust a journalist, it's still a reporter's duty to report o...

Not sure if anyone noticed the fallout from a Stab interview hinting that Dane Reynolds was quitting the World Tour, but it provided an interesting window into the world of surf media. http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/dane-reynolds-quit-tour-stab-sensationalist-surfjournalism/ "It’s difficul...

Anyone here read West of Jesus by Steven Kotler? I did a while back and really liked it a lot.
