Re: Just general surfing stuff

Very good article by Sean Doherty about JJF and a quick trip to King Island with Rasta. https://www.surfer.com/features/king-island-john-florence-profile/ "Very good" You reckon? They tried to write it as though Florence is some kind of fccckn mythical figure. Boring as batshit. Then there is the q...

Re: Just general surfing stuff

Thought I would look up how Occys wave is progressing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTL07Ub_ZFs The piston thingy in the middle of the lake that makes the waves is an impressive size, as is the size of the lake. I just can't get my head around curved lines of swell, weakening energy as the swell ...

Re: skateboarding ...

They give skate parks away in Nimbin. https://www.northernstar.com.au/news/steel-skatepark-nimbin-concrete/659830/ Probably one of the best ever examples of wasting tax payer money. No one realised that skate boards on metal ramps are loud and the sound echoed through the town, one end of the half p...

Most of his surfing is 30 percent above and 30 percent below the fall line.

It's the bottom 20 percent of the wave face where you get the compression to load up the dome, which gives projection and speed coming out of a bottom turn. .

Re: The Good Luck A Number One McCoy Thread

Christ when are you cnuts going to give up on that shit. McCoys? This month three people who I've surfed with a lot here commented that my boards are working well for me, and another three who I didn't know said they like my board. Sounds like they are noticing the springiness of the loaded dome.

Re: The Good Luck A Number One McCoy Thread

My theory regarding feet position is, heel of front foot directly above apex of rocker which is also the apex of the dome, which is 2'' below 1/2 way on my 1995 pointy nose model McCoy . Bouyancy to weight ratio of .6 of a litre per kilo of body weight is the perfect tuning that allows my feet to la...

Re: J-Bay Pro 2017

Thanks Nick, Hey real pity that did not give us a result either way (as we really could do with some clear evidence that SS makes any difference) but have to say fitting a surfboard unit to the hull of a ski is just basically a waste of time because the obvious happened. Not rocket science that one...

Re: Modern Planing hulls

Excuse my ignorance gents, but what defines a "modern planing hull"? Dummy's version Design wise, flatter rocker. Feel wise, the skatey, faster, up on top of the water, feel of the flatter rocker. Observed one being surfed really well at a mid north coast point break, and the only negative was the ...

Re: Modern Planing hulls

It's funny. Everytime I think about getting a short (as it sub 6'0) shortboard model, the surf pumps (this arvo at the point was the best I've seen for years. 3-5Ft 16secs south swell barrels), and I realise what a shit paddler I am and how I rely on volume and length to get in. Only made a few dro...

Re: Midlengths

Recently checked out one of Bert Burgers design talks. His perspective on volume is at the other end of the volume spectrum . His number is .33 litres per kg of body weight and this number relates more to surface area than volume. He's a big bloke and he mentions he was riding a board 23'' wide and ...

Re: Midlengths

Looking at this - just not certain. its an MC Islander 6'10 x 22 3/4 x 3 1/4 (wide!). Single concave as well, although not sure how deep. 5 fin set up. Seems like almost a 'big boy shortboard' (I'm not particularly big) or maybe something close to a Firewire Addvance (with a narrower nose) or a V-s...

Re: Shearer. Boo. Come in here

Alakaboo wrote. The energy and the swell are one and the same. They can't be at tangents to each other. I appreciate the reply and especially this insight. My theory was based on trying to understand where the energy of the diminishing length of swell between the orange line and the break wall goes....

Re: Shearer. Boo. Come in here

Here are my observations of how Illuka break wall works. You have bland typical closeout bathymetry running from the breakwall along the beach. The black bathymetric lines in the diagram show the beach depth 1 metre, 2metres , 3 metres and 4 metres. http://i602.photobucket.com/albums/tt110/kenipini4...
