cheers for that.
i guess that means either a compromised quad or a compromised thruster.
not necessarily both.

thruster + two more trial
my current shortboard is for replacement soon. the design hasn't changed much over the last few years and i am happy with that. it is a 6'3" x 18.5" x 2n3/8ths rounded (area) pin, single to double to flat - pretty standard hp thruster. i am interested in trying a hp quad set-up not too far removed. ...

Re: fin foil
thanks nick. my fwiw: inside foil makes the low rockered boards i ride feel less twitchy and feel like it evens out the acceleration highs and lows. skin a cat i know, but in short, it makes flighty boards (which work best where i live) more predictable. i have not noticed a loss of feel - perhaps m...

fin foil
i am looking at buying a new set of fins but am having difficulty comparing apples. i use M3s and M5s and occassionally 3s and 5s without the inside foil. There are other brands (KR) spruiking 80/20 ratio on the foil. so are all FCS fins also 80/20? and what does 80/20 mean? is it 80% on the outside...

Re: Nicks' New Fat-Bat
i have pulled out maybe three plugs over the years. i got the shock of my life a couple of weeks ago when surfing a small shallow beachie. the fin snapped off clean at the tabs (must have clipped the bottom). the tabs were a bitch to get out but the plugs were undamaged. no damage to the glass fore ...

feels like a v bottom
my current single into double concave feels like a v-bottom sort of like it is pushing water and not driving or funneling the water out the back through the fins very forgiving board but feels.....fluffy is this possible if the centre 'ridge' of the double is too high or begins too abruptly? or is i...

work from a known starting point drag out the old boards you have been riding and get an idea of the shape and size of the old fins find something similar in the fcs range for a trial be certain you know the board(s) board design is at least as important like others i tried many fins before coming b...

western tasmania
i may find myself looking for work in the new year.
there is a couple of jobs for me in the Queenstown/Zeehan area of Tassie.
is anyone familiar with the surf in the surrounding area?
any info regarding the consistency of breaks/size/winds/water temp/etc would be much appreciated.

longer boards can tend to crease easier (all things being equal) compared to shorter boards due to their added length. It is a bit like bending a plastic ruler by applying force to each end. A 20cm ruler requires more force to get the same amount of deflection at the centre than a 40cm ruler (mechan...

yeah, so was i when it was explained to me when i picked up the board. the bottom rocker is not stepped. the outline has no flyers. the rail thickness decreases in a subtle step. the step change is along the rail line not the deck line. the rail shape changes to suit. if you imagine the width of the...

flyers
the guy who shapes my boards said he altered my regular shortboard for summery conditions. he has put a subtle flyer on the rail. the flyers are not visible in the outline - only in the rail rocker. rocker through the centre is not affected - just the overall depth of concave as the rail thickness d...

i am not interested in the tough/soft argument. i have noticed over the years that a number of days of ne winds will cause water temperatures to drop to steamer water temperatures. I have done most of my surfing north of sydney so maybe it is more noticeable here. it is a trap for young players who,...
