Re: My rashy is killing me
Hi, Petu ... No, they're black with an ugly big Quiksilver logo in white on the front but, as I say, you can get rid of that with a blunt knife and a bit of scratching. Helps to stay a bit anonymous in the crowded hell hole where I do my day to day surfing. They're thicker and a bit heavier than the ...

Re: My rashy is killing me
The problem with rashies is that after a summer of hard use they've stretched so much that they sag and bag. For what it's worth, Quiksilver make a thicker and heavier one - 95.5 per cent polypropylene, 4.5 spandex, whatever all that means. These seem to retain their fit longer and I've never had a ...

Re: 10 sharkiest waves In Aus
In another life - just before leg ropes came in! - I can vividly remember surfing Back Beach at Streaky Bay with three mates and no one else around for miles, as it was back then. It was a hot summer afternoon on a dumpy sort of swell and we all lost our boards and had to swim in. We're all standing...

Re: getting old, dont want struggle on a shorty
Having turned 65 last month, I intend to keep on surfing until I become a total embarrassment to myself, instead of being the half embarrassment I am now. I'm all but full time on mals now, having gone that way a couple of years ago. My main board is a lightweight 9-1 McTavish UFO that I've had for ...

Re: Back injury inquiry
Sorry, gents ... when I made the initial inquiry that started this thread, I didn't mean to spark a squabble over who's right and who's wrong in the back cracking business. In the end, after going down a couple of dead ends, I ended up going to see a guy called Stephen Thwaites who is an osteopath, ...

Back injury inquiry
Can anyone recommend a good back tweaker anywhere around Sydney's eastern suburbs beaches? I did something or other to the lower right side of my back a couple of weeks ago while catching a dribbly little nothing of a wave at Bondi. I jarred it more than stretched it while dropping into the wave and...

Re: Anyone watched John From Cincinnati?
G' day Big Kahuna ... nice Aussie name you got there, cobber. Where did you pick that one up? Wouldn't be from a cheesy American movie called Gidget by any chance, eh m-a-t-t-e. Have a nice cup of tea, pop a packet of Bex, put on Slim Dusty's Greatest Hits, turn out the light and have wet dreams abo...

Re: Anyone watched John From Cincinnati?
Yeah, Keala Kennelly is actually quite a good actress, playing a tough but tender surfer chick - art imitating life, I guess. She's in the surfing footage too. The surf genius kid is played by Herbie Fletcher's grandson ... sadly, he won't be winning an Academy Award any time soon. The surf noir wri...

Anyone watched John From Cincinnati?
Laid up after a surfer's ear op, I've just finished watching the U.S. TV series John From Cincinnati which depicts the life and times of a totally dysfunctional family of surfers. This is a very bizarre show - it was made by HBO (Home Box Office), which has a pretty good track record - The Sopranos ...

Re: Surf Journalism: "An endless summer of sycophancy" ???
Wasn't there once a famous Jew who was supposed to have walked on water? Maybe he was the first surfer - beat the Hawaiians to it. All this what's PC and not PC talk is getting very tiresome. The simple truth is that Stab used the "f...ing Jew" comment - yes, a stupid thing to say - for its own sens...

Re: Surf Journalism: "An endless summer of sycophancy" ???
Fred Pawle's rave about the surfing media in The Australian is a joke because if he dared look closer to home - the media at the big end of town, for example - he would admit that sycophancy greases its money-making wheels. Do you think motoring writers pay for their trips to European and U.S. motor...

Re: NO TOXIC SHIP
Instead of sinking Adelaide off Avoca, maybe they should sink Avoca off Adelaide - as some comedian suggested in the SMH's letters page today. From my time down there many years ago, the south end of Moana Beach, a dribbly little beach break at the best of times, could do with a decent pile of rubbl...

Re: the young clubbie killed at the aust titles on the goldy
When is the last time you saw someone being rescued by a ski paddler? When is the last time you saw someone being rescued by a aurf boat crew? Both have nothing to do with the actual act of "surf lifesaving" any more - virtually all rescues, on busy beaches at least, are done by paddle board, jet sk...

Surf mags ... Produced by people who can't write for people who can't read and they're about people who have nothing to say. That's why they're full of photographs.

Re: Hawaiian Airlines - Boards?
Hi Dunnc ... Am travelling Hawaiian Airlines to Honolulu next month on a "take a mate" deal - my mate being my wife - for $1360 return all up for both of us. Includes two meals, all in flight entertainment. Pretty good deal. Checked the board situation and, at least under the tickets we have, each p...

Re: Bombora - History of Australian Surfing
Just to be a complete pendant ... Shane Stedman, despite Bombora's willingness to let the myth live on, did not come up with that great Ocker pride 'n' joy, the ugg boot. That's down to John Arnold, one of the pioneers of South Australian surfing who ran a surfboard outlet in the back of his family'...

I buy a couple of packs of BluTac every couple of months from the local hardware shop. $4? $4.450 each? Something like that. I usally keep one in the car, although living at the beach in Sydney I can hardly be bothered driving unless it's really necessary. In winter, I keep some with my wax and stuf...

Have had chronic ear problems for years through surfing. Have tried all the plugs, but none of them work efficiently. Initially, was very sceptical about BluTac but it's by far the best and once you're used to it - that is, you can't hear anything or anyone - it doesn't really matter. Anyway, you're...
