Re: Storm Surfers 3D

Thought I'd answer a few of your questions Trev. * How many boards have Tom and Ross got in that unit? Looks like one for every day of the year. Actually, we set up the garage with a couple of dozen of Ross and Tom's favorite boards from their own garages. For example, if you look behind the big mon...

Re: Storm Surfers 3D

Thanks for the confirmation DonW. I always wonder when I see things like that if I'm just going potty. And with Ben playing such a big part in the movie, you would think he would pick it up. Actually I didn't have much to do with the post-production side of things, once filming was comple...

Re: Storm Surfers 3D

Trev, almost everything was filmed in 3D (ie not 'converted', which is a popular way of saving costs). The film crew had to invent a lot of the technology as it's the first time surfing has ever been filmed in this way (on such a big scale anyway). Check this clip from the ABC's 'Catalyst' show for ...

Re: CW+

zaen, I'm not saying it's dumb - it's just not necessary given the exorbitant price to provide the service (which is generally offered for free, or a minimal subscription cost at best). Even if I were able to stream HD quality cams across an ADSL line, the streaming costs at my end would multiply ex...

Re: CW+

Maybe - I haven't seen the NBN specs. In any case, that's years away - and technology will progress in leaps and bounds by this time. So the streaming concerns of today will probably be replaced by fresh technological hurdles.

Re: CW+

BTW, we'd be able to stream much higher quality surfcam vision if Telstra, Optus and AAPT provided wholesale Annex M infrastructure. Looks that's unlikely to ever happen though (as it'd probably cannibalise their higher priced business products).

Re: CW+

Agreed alakaboo - but it's somewhat irrelevant if the user doesn't actually receive what's being advertised. They could have a network of Red Epic 617 cameras shooting 120fps at 261 megapixels, but if the consumer ends up watching a 640 x 480 pixel stream at 300Kbps, then it's definitely not HD - no...

Re: CW+

And I agree with you TMC - it's not necessary to have surfcams broadcasting in HD.

Re: CW+

Actually Don, download speeds are irrelevant for streaming surfcams. It's all about the upload speed of the ADSL1/2+ connection. And as far as I am aware, the USA and Australia are about on par with each other. In order to broadcast HD format you'd need a business grade SHDSL service or fibre, which...

Re: CW+

'HD surfcams' are an interesting claim. The lowest video quality that can be classified 'HD' is 720p, which has a frame size of 1,280×720 pixels (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_video ). Such a frame size is full screen on most computer monitors. However, surfcams are generally broa...

Re: CW+

Oh, and if you're comparing us with the competition in Victoria, it's also worth tallying up how many surf reporters they have - we've got six Victorians in total, each of whom uploads a couple of images with their report.

Re: CW+

Animal Chin, we've got some good news - our replacement cams arrived in the office late last week, and they're being installed in the next week or so. And we've got a surfcam also going in at Torquay too, which will take our Vicco total to five. It's taken way longer than we had hoped (to upgrade th...

Re: tide times...yes i'm havin a bitch...again

Fong, our tides are for the open ocean locations, and correct for Noosa (if you're surfing that is). I'm not sure on the specifics but Tewantin is likely to experience local effects where the phases and timings are different. Also, keep in mind that the tide time predictions are based on lunar/solar...

PS>> the Rip Curl Pro is a fully mobile event :?: 4 different locations over 4 different days. Johanna and 13th were a hell of a lot better than anything Bakio's dished up over the last 5 years!

Re: Time to start judging the journos!

Fong, I reckon your average local club rally would have 40-50 people in attendance, and they're all just surfing. Every major surfing magazine and/or surfing website from around the world had a team of 2-6 people on site at Bells Beach (including overseas publications). The webcast team was (at a ro...

Re: Time to start judging the journos!

possibly - but the running costs are very expensive as it is. There's around 200 people on site at each event; an extra day adds a lot of money to the event's bottom line.. just in the hope that it'll guarantee good waves (which it doesn't). I don't know if there's a solution for this - personally, ...

Re: Time to start judging the journos!

The other KEY factor is when Easter falls and the date the event runs. Right on the cusp of Victoria's REAL wave season Bells is often a feast or famine deal Peely, gotta bring up this point as we had long debates in the Swellnet house about it - I just don't think there's much merit in the suggest...

Re: New Swellnet Site

The Torquay reporter had the same problem? Yes, he did - he actually sent it to me to upload but we were mid-debugging so it didn't get uploaded.. and with the crappy surf in Vicco today it wasn't a priority. There's always some degree of teething problems with any new website launch, and Swellnet ...
