Re: Midlengths

Recently checked out one of Bert Burgers design talks. His perspective on volume is at the other end of the volume spectrum . His number is .33 litres per kg of body weight and this number relates more to surface area than volume. He's a big bloke and he mentions he was riding a board 23'' wide and...

Re: Midlengths

I agree with what's been said. If you go to the Firewire site you can find a board with similar dimensions to the MC Islander, the closest I found was 6'10 by 22'' by 3 1/4'' which has a volume of 55.4 litres, if you add about 1 1/2 litres for the 3/4'' width difference you get 57 litres. The 6'10'...

Re: Midlengths

Thanks for the comments, food for thought . I knew it was high volume (I'm 80kg or a tad more) but narrow nose etc so thought there might still be relatively easy turning. not that I'm a massive turner, mostly weaving up and down and the odd (looking) cutback. I do have a mini mal so have a high vo...

Re: Midlengths

Looking at this - just not certain. its an MC Islander 6'10 x 22 3/4 x 3 1/4 (wide!). Single concave as well, although not sure how deep. 5 fin set up. Seems like almost a 'big boy shortboard' (I'm not particularly big) or maybe something close to a Firewire Addvance (with a narrower nose) or a V-s...

Re: Midlengths

On small fins. I have a JD 6'2" stepup. Went on a road trip to sth NSW last year and only wanted to take one board so that was it - just in case. Took some tiny fins for smaller days. PG3 in the rear, quad rears in front. Haven't changed them back. Not ideal for smaller days, but more than surfable...

Re: J-Bay Pro 2017

Hey Nick, are there any black people in South Africa? I've been looking carefully and can't see any! Amazing isn't it. That's a knot I can't untangle TMS. One intelligent and observant local told me that of the 50 million people South Africa, a small number live in a middle class bubble, a few are ...

Re: Midlengths

Thanks mate. I'm a reformed fin player arounderer but if I can get it going in average waves it'll pretty much be a one board quiver. Plus it's a damn fine board. Save me from using the family minimal. Not that there's anything wrong with that

Re: Midlengths

I'm sure I've got 3's mate but cheers. You're 80+ aren't you ? What do you use on narrower tailed quads? I know davros at 100kg uses m5 as his fronts. On an old quad of mine, I found the fronts and rears too far apart, and ended up using big fronts, but tiny rears. At one point I had single tab rear...

Re: Midlengths

After nick mentioning something about using the smallest fins you can, I ordered some tiny fins to see if I can get the mid length jd to work in everyday waves. Feels a big long/stiff if the waves are weak, but I generally like big fins, pc-7 and gx rears. Spent too much time on fishy wide tails may...

Re: Where did you surf today ?

Had my first surf in about 6 weeks at longy yesterday. Just perfect, fun little waves on the mal. Actually surfed a little better than I normally do somehow. A great reminder why I bother doing this after a very long time of struggling with motivation. I got injured 3.5 weeks ago. lower back blew o...
