Re: surfing tips and tricks.
Closeouts are a little pointless to surf. I have surfed them recently for fitness and to practice takeoffs ready for a trip away to Indo. True closeouts are really something to go straight on and get used to handling a straight ahead take off and handle the curve at the bottom - keep your nose up an...

takeoffs Arm strength makes a huge difference. That is paddle strength and push up strength. The strong paddling gets you in early positioned well with some speed and or under the lip, push up strength makes it all happen instinctively and quickly - you lift up and swing your feet under you without ...

Re: Ask Carroll
Nick, This little theory on the decline of surf brands may interest you - not revolutionary or maybe even new but I have not really seen it articulated in my casual reading of surf media. What do you reckon? Up until about 7 years ago the surf brands had real power Kids really wanted the stuff. Bill...

Re: Most inconsistent waves in Australia
A feature of wave action erosion is that it is always acting to straight coast - erode the sand or rock that sticks out and fill in the bays. Classic rivermouth breaks usually will not produce good waves if they are too exposed as the banks get ripped away. Hence some of the mega sandbar spots are b...

Dreams about surfing - caught inside a 500ft peak
Usually when I dream about surfing something goes weird and I don't end up riding any waves. I've had waves turn into couches and a footpath. Occasionally though they get good. In my dreams I have surfed perfect 10ft Pipe, dropping in clean and sitting way back inside. I've zoomed along doing 360 ca...

Re: What is missing from so many surf videos - 4 suggestions
nstead of the usual cutting to the surfer as he's getting to his feet, show a few waves starting with the 5 seconds as it approaches the surfer, showing it draining off the reef/bank and moulding itself - this is the time when you get the surge of excitement/anticipation running through you when yo...

What is missing from so many surf videos - 4 suggestions
These suggestions are to both photographers and the editors Lineup shots The typical video has a 5 second lineup shot then zooms in to the close up action. Personally I find lineup shots showing how particular surf spots break from start to finish really interesting. It gives a real sense of the wav...

Re: Chasing the dragon
It took some hefty doses of perfection (Qld superbank at its best and Indo) before I became more relaxed about "missing" out. For a long time before that I felt I hadn't had my share of those days you see in the movies / mags as they are often years apart where I live. If I am right in front of good...

A bit of flab, yep, but definitely not sad. Best 10 days surfing ever.
Sad is stuck on the couch watching TV getting old.

a few snippets from the book Surfing the majestic HTs, one of the world’s most perfect and photogenic surf breaks, is akin to being seduced by a beautiful, scantily clad vampire temptress. You are drawn in by her seductive curves and allure, despite knowing all is not as it seems. Then just as you l...

Re: Getting caught inside at HTs and Rifles
Had one surf there on the trip. Got some good ones, piked the biggest sets and had some wipeouts. Gaps between sets allowed me to get out without doing the lap in over the reef. Almost ended up on the table once with an 6 wave set but squeaked out with the reef sucking dry not far away. The far insi...

Re: Bong in big trouble
Just not sure if the kids value a cool brand quite as much as they did only a few years ago. My kids don't care much - even the fashion conscious one. They almost take pleasure in finding cheaper stuff that looks good. Whereas it used to be they would prefer the brand a lot more but buy cheaper stuf...
