Re: Bali with 2 year old
Hi Phil, I just spent 6 months in bali with my family, 3yo, 6yo, 9yo and 10yo. the 3yo turned 4 whilst we were over there. Spent the entire time on the Bukit from March to Sept, but travelled a lot. Surfed Sanur and Nusa Dua. Either of those would be the go. Both have good quality hotels. I think Nu...

Re: BIGGEST WAVE YOU EVER DUCK DIVED
I've had a lot of bad ones and the worst ones where I thought I might not come up have actually been in comparatively small surf - I think you get overconfident at times in the smaller stuff and don't prepare yourself well. However there are two specific ones that spring to mind; both over reef bott...

You cannot imagine the joy I feel in being mentioned by such an esteemed contributor as - sorry can't remember your name - that guy above. he is always a part of such intelligent dialogue and really adds mature, insightful value to discussions in general. I don't have a lot of time to indulge litera...

Re: Bodyboarding and Cycling from Banda Aceh to Bali
I've been to Indo a few times and have always taken a PP board with stringers. Never had any problems. But then I like my boards stiff as .... a board!

Progression in Bodyboarding
I saw this thread in the general area, and thought it would be good to start a discussion about it as it relates to bodyboarding, as it's consumed my thoughts a little over the past couple of months. Recently I've noticed in most bodyboard media the focus on huge airs, reverses etc. and the desire f...

we don't score rolls in whitewash. It's not the scoring of the move that counts; it's the scoring of the entire wave. Moves obviously come into that, and I still maintain that the best move on the most critical part of the wave will help a wave score the highest. I think you'll find that those who d...

but Marcus, what would you ride without an industry? There would be no boards and no equipment. You'd be back to bodysurfing which is fun but it hardly gets you slotted at the Island, does it? You're obviously involved in the community to some extent - you're here aren't you? Therefore from my persp...

I help run the comps. We're working on the judging but this is an amateur club - we can't be everywhere at once. We need each individual member to do their bit and SPEAK UP if you think there's an issue with any areas of the comp. We have someone committed to watching the judging to try to ensure th...

Spoon's right Hatch, it does get easier. I've still got a way to go on my sentence, but doing the time is not so bad now. I have a pretty good cell mate. That's what made us think about number four. Once they hit two-and-a-half or so the workload drops (which is how old my third is). Probably the bi...

I have 3 kids Marcus, and a fourth on the way. I also have what I reckon is a pretty reasonable job and an unwavering addiction to surfing waves of a variety of sizes and drinking beer with my mates as often as I can(or others who might not yet be mates but will buy a round! Then they are truly mate...

I know what some of these people get and it's probably correct to say that the top 10 Aussie guys can make a living out of it (ie above $100K a year). In his heyday Tamega was earning about $US300K a year, but he was the best in the world for a very long time. The top international guys can get this...

Interesting topic. What about locals vs. locals? i.e. if there is one local in the lineup and another who each jostle for priority, who has it? The idea of localism is pretty ordinary I reckon. I would classify myself as a local at a place like Curly, but the fact is I've actually surfed DY Point fo...

I spoke with Dave Winchester about this a month ago. From what I understand it's nothing to do with sponsors or choice; it's the Hawaiian government making decisions about who they lease Pipe out to over the winter season. Because bodyboarding is a little smaller commercially, it sometimes gets shun...

Thank you all. NickC - my father and grandfather were both psychologists and I study behaviour to make my living, so I too am of the school of believing that underlying genetics are primarily responsible for peoples' actions - and thus unchangeable. However it's comforting to know that age makes a d...
